2007 TRD 4x4 Towing

I have a 2007 Taco TRD Sport 4x4 w/ the factory tow package. Looking to tow a trailer weighing in at approx 4100 lbs, with 275 lb tongue weight.

Adequate ? Bad idea ? Experiences ? Options ?

I'd reccomend trailer brakes and to monitor your trans temps if you have an automatic.

Also don't tow in overdrive.

 

The truck will do it.
The truck wont like it.
You wont like it.
But it will do it.

4th gear is your friend.
The closer you get to 3,000 RPM the better the truck pulls.

No, I don't like too.
The engine was fine at 65-70 mph in 4th gear.
My transmission was fine (because I towed in 4th)

You can tow in 5th SOME......
But once the transmission starts locking/unlocking the convector, switch to 4th.
Or else risk possibly damaging the transmission.

Engine oil and diff oil are cheap, compared to a new transmission.

If you have have a manual transmission. Send it.

 

A little more info. How often you going to tow, how far, terrain desert, mountains, mostly flat etc.? The 4100 lbs is that dry weight?
As previously said it ain’t going to be fun or pleasant. It’ll be stressful. Pulling it will be a pita and stopping it will be no fun either.

 

4100 lbs total weight of a loaded trailer is probably OK. If the 4100 lbs is empty trailer weight you can probably tow it, but with only a driver in the cab. Your truck will PULL 6500 lbs. but much over 4000-4500 lbs and you don't have enough payload to handle the trailer and any passengers or cargo in the truck.

I don't know where you're getting 275 lbs tongue weight. It should be a minimum of 10% with a max of 15% of trailer weight. Most people try for about 13%. That would be 533 lbs on the tongue. My Tacoma only has 1200 lbs of payload. That would leave me less than 700 lbs for me, my wife and any cargo in the truck.

FWIW, I have basically the same truck although it isn't my primary tow vehicle. I also have a F150. I used to have a trailer that was about 4100 lbs loaded. I pulled it a few times with the Tacoma. It wasn't ideal, but on level ground it worked fine. I wouldn't want to pull that in mountains. My current trailer is closer to 3500 and it handles it much better.

You need to determine YOUR trucks payload, they are all a bit different. It's on a sticker on the drivers door jamb. Most 4X4 Crew cabs will be 1000-1300 lbs. An Access cab or Regular cab may have a little more.

 

towed a 6x12 uhaul. Filled it and the bed. Including mountains and attitude.

had metal tools. So that has more weight than someone who doesn’t have tools.

but I also don’t lug around heavy fancy expensive dressers, tables, sofas, and beds.
I rock IKEA. It’s cheap, universal, and if I move try to sell it first to not deal with bulk and weight. A lot less useful than tools.

got a Kallax cube bookshelf? No problem. Sell it and get another at your destination.
It’s not priceless gold that has to be held onto and carried. At least tools can be thrown in a tote or toolbox.

some trailers come with brakes some don’t.

don’t overdrive the factory Lil Tykes brakes. Or fix it.

I’ve towed in 6th. Many have. No issues.

 

OD is Over Drive.
It only applies to the automatic transmissions.

I have a 3900 pound trailer behind a 22 auto. At 55 its just fine, at 60 its getting a bit strained and at 65 its floggin it. I have a wdh to make towing uneventful. Rear brake controller mandatory. If your not in a hurry anyway?

 

Thanks all. Good stuff. Just FYI, trailer does have electric brakes. Brake controller is already installed. Truck has 'heavy duty' pads & shoes, and drilled discs on the front. Will be using a WDH. Fully aware not to tow (anything) in 5th / OD. Won't even use OD when pulling my little sailboats.
Kinda assumed it would be marginal w/ current truck, especially since there will likely be mountain roads (and dirt roads) involved. Maybe time to go up a step to the Tundra's I've been lusting for (although I hear they ain't that great at towing either - payload & capacity).

should be fine. don't go over that weight if you don't have to. lighten the load for best pull. try and stay around half the rated weight of 6500lbs.
my rig is a 19 footer and dry weight of 2900 lbs. My 2019 TRD OFF ROAD 6CYL cant even feel the weight until i go up a steep hill or grade but has no problems and handles well.
Tow hitch weight distribution, brake controller and rear camera on back of trailer is working great for me. Happy trails Bro.
