Another popping front end noise thread

Before I get started let me explain that I've been diagnosing this for probably close to 8 months now. I've read every thread on tacoma world probably 2-3 times on this issue.

My trucks been making a front end popping sound when my wheels are turned and I pull into a driveway at low speed. Particularly my home driveway that's got a pretty good incline. It happens every single time I pull in and out. Occasionally it happens on a speed bump as well and only seems to happen at low speeds. To me it sounds like it's coming from the passenger front tire area.

Things I've tried.

Replace/Upgraded front radiator area body mount/support bushings with Energy Suspension bushings.
Loosen LCA Cam bolts and retorque
Loosen Bamf IFS skid plate bolts and re torque
Check/Retorque upper control arm bolt (L and R side)
Check/Retorque Lower ball joint bolts that bolt the LCA to the lower ball joint (L and R side)
Check/Retorque basically every suspension and steering component (L and R side)
Sprayed Sillicone lubrication in the LCA Cam bushings.
Inspected rear leaf pack for any rubbing issues.
Nothing has eliminated this issue or made any change.

I'm running OME BP51 Coils up front, OME BP51 Shocks in the Rear with Dakar MD Leaf pack in the rear.

Running SPC upper control arm and recently re greased as well.

I'm suspecting it could possibly be a problem with the Lower ball joint, Tie rod ends, or Sway bar end links. or maybe even the CV Shafts. The CV shafts have no tears in the boot and no apparent or excessive play upon inspection and attempting to move them around. The Tie Rod end and Sway bar end links have all been recently Re torqued, but havn't loosened and re torqued.

Truck runs fantastic and drives fantastic down the highway, very quiet no issues. Truck is a 2019 SR5 with about 25,000 miles on it.

I'll get a video up of the popping issue soon. Any other ideas? I've lived with it for about 8 months now and I can't wait to solve this.

 

Those situations are all situations where I would expect tire rub if I had over sized tires (which I do). I’ve had tire rub and can imagine it as being described as a popping sound. Do you have meaty mud terrains?

 

285/75/16’s (33’s) cooper st Maxx. I don’t think it’s that I have lots of clearance. I just went and visually inspected the suspect areas for rubbing I have a cab mount chop and pinch weld hammered and Trimming and don’t see any wear marks. It will even do the sound sometimes when I just turn the steering wheel at a stop and am just barely letting my foot off the brake.

 

Just had my neighbors over and we were messing with it for a while trying to determine where the noise was coming from and it almost seemed to come from under the trucks mid section.

After being fed up and re torquing the rest of my slider bolts and mid and transfer case skid bolts and no changed. I glanced at the 4 cab/body mount bolts. Grabbed a 17mm and re torqued those. Holy shit it’s quiet now. For now…

I may have finally found it!!! I’ll update after a few days but I’m pretty happy as of now.

You've probably visited my thread about this as well. I still don't know what it is but I believe it has something to do with tire rubbing of some sort. Especially with my E rated tires being a little bit taller. It's been months since the issue came up and I have been offroading multiple times, and driven thousands of miles, have had full inspections at the dealership with nothing found. The problem is still there (especially when I am stationary and turn the wheel all the way left or right). I am convinced it's a tire rub of some sort against something. The problem does not do this while on the lift.

You and I also have the same set up.

 

Wonder if it could be the steering shaft

 

Make sure your front sway-bar isn't moving side to side when you're turning.... They sell collars you put on the sway-bar to keep it in place. Sway-bar moving side to side will cause that sound. Don't ask how I know...

 

Sounds like bad front cab mounts. The rubber tends to wear out prematurely on these trucks creating that metal on metal sound whenever going over bumps at low speed. This is a known issue.

 

Mine was sort of a popping sound. I'm so happy so far ever since i've snugged the body/cab mounts it's been silent. not one pop. I knew right when i made the thread about it i'd find it. Hopefully if anyone else has this popping sound they can come across this thread. that was a super easy thing to check, i'm suprised i never thought of it before.

 

I'm going to have to try that, I get a slight pop every once in a while if I'm turning sharp left, usually if there is a dip in the road. Mine sounds like it comes from the front passenger side of the truck.

I am chasing this elusive noise also... can you share a pic of what you torqued and how much?

 

it’s the cab mount that everyone chops to fit bigger tires. There’s one on each side and another toward the front of the rear tires. I just went around twice with a 17mm deep socket and snugged em up a bit tighter than they were.

I have 6112's with stock UCA's and I get a slight popping noise when I turn in a parking lot and hit that dip that they typically have.

 

This did it for me. I'm sure it's only temporary and I'll need to replace the mounts eventually but peace for now! Appreciate your post.

Edit: For anybody unfamiliar, the front most (14mm) cab mounts are right behind the front part of the fender liner. I was able to get a torque wrench on them by taking off one clip and peeling it back. The other two are easily accessible and are 17mm. Torqued them all to 34ftlbs.
