AGM Battery Question - New Battery at 63% Health

Hi all. I just bought and installed a 24F AGM Interstate Battery from Costco in my 2022 Tacoma (stats below).

I tested it with a Topdon ArtiBattery101 Battery Tester right after I installed it and got these results:

Health: 63% - 565CCA
Charge: 100% - 13.11V
Internal R= 4.38
Rated: 710CCA

Now I know the 3rd Gen alternator can't charge it at the 14v it needs without a tune, but should the health and CCA be so low on a new battery?

Any help here would be great. Thanks!

If it’s not fully charged the CCA literally cannot reach its rated capacity. Without a tune I’d recommend a plug-in charger equipped to do a maintainence charge for agm and retest when it’s FULLY charged.

 

Gotcha! So if I understand you correctly, the Battery Health is based on that lower CCA which is why it's 63%. Thanks so much!

Get a Noco Boost GB40 to keep it fully topped off.

I'm running an Everstart 24F AGM from Wally World (Johnson Controls, same manufacture as Costco's AGM), but it has a 4 year free replacement warranty instead of Costco's 3 year. I charge mine about once a month if I remember. Still using the stock factory tune.

I also keep a Noco Genius 10 in the truck just in case.

 

I used to sell batteries we used to use those electronic testers but got rid of them because they were notoriously inaccurate. If you want to find the health of a battery you really need a carbon pile to put a real load on the battery and verify the voltage under load.

A) That battery is not meant for your application.
B) Cheap chicom battery testers are worthless.

 

If you haven't added a shit ton of electronics, you are wasting money with an AGM battery.

I've run AGM batteries in every vehicle I've owned for the past 20 years.
Usually get 5 to 8 years out of them, but I've gotten up to ten on one occasion.
I'm currently well into year 6 with the AGM battery I swapped my OEM for in the Tacoma the week I brought it home from the dealer.
It's just my personal preference, as lead acid batteries in my experience, have a tendency to leak, off gas and generally rust shit in their general vicinity.
Never tested them, just ran them, inevitably with good luck.

I wouldn't overthink it OP, and I certainly wouldn't lose sleep worrying whether or not the AGM battery in my car, truck, motorcycle or lawn mower was topped off to it's full potential at any given moment.

Then the answer to your question is "yes".

 

As previously mentioned get a noco or etec battery maintainer. Batteries need 3 stage charge (bulk, absorption, float) for optimum health and to prolong their life. All good solar charge controllers go through these 3 stages.

 

Thanks! I did just add two 45w Cascadia 4x4 solar panels and their Mppt controller. Do you think that will suffice?

 

I said etec and should have said ctec. I'm not familiar with your particular charge controller.

 

I agree with all of this. I began using AGM batteries in 1998. I have not had to clean a battery terminal since 1998. This is not a coincidence.

 

how's this battery working out for you? My oem one has died and looking at an agm. I actually have the same cascadia set up as you too

 

So far so good. I periodically check the battery levels and they are staying consistent with the panels charging them all the time. I'll report back if things change.
