I am not sure what the name of the style of locking nut that comes with the v-bands. Typically they are cones in appearance. Sometimes nuts. With slits cut in the top. Any idea Colin?

 

Outside of "v-band lock nut", I don't know if they have a specific name. But I do have a theory on why they seem to be one time use. The top center nut in the below photo shows a more exaggerated variety of the nuts. They essentially start life as a castle nut, or at least the manufacturing process is similar up to that point. After the slits are cut, the nut is pressed in a die, that deforms the 6 cut sections inward. You can see that in the photo, where the gap in the slits is narrower at the top. Less noticable with nuts like the one on the left that aren't as tall.

This creates some additional friction, similar to, but not as much as a top lock nut. So what I believe happens is that the slits act similar to the cutting threads on a die, but since it's not hardened tool steel that maintains it's shape, when you try to remove the nut, the leading edge of each section digs into the t-bolt and the sections of the nut actually twist, meaning the harder you try to get the nut off, the further they twist an dig in.

So it may not actually be gauling that's happening. it might just be an intentionally destructive locking mechanism that greats a true mechanical lock vs relying on friction.

Then the question is, does a top lock provide enough friction, and can the softer stainless steel threads handle the additional friction without gauling.

My guess is that the additional friction of the top lock does cause gauling, or at least an increased potential. So if you have to cut the t-bolt either way, I'd rather have the mechanical locking of the squished castle nut.

 

Bruh you tighten it and say that's not going anywhere. No need for pinch nuts or nyloc nut.

 

But the overanalysis by hobbyists and semi-pros of an already decently engineered item is the entire point of tacomaworld! Where's your confrontational spirit?

Rounded out the exhaust last night. The phone microphone just doesn't do it justice. Sounds staticky. The MBRP dual muffler setup was the right choice, and sounds beautiful.

Went to a car meet yesterday. Good time, and lots of quality rides. I only took a few photos, so just a snippet of what was there.

This first one is of the BRZ with the newly added Cusco strut tower bar. It needed that, since we had to remove the factory strut braces.

A few years ago, I swapped out the Kelford intake camshafts for OEM intake camshafts. To do some testing to see if I gained any low end torque over the Kelfords. I knew I would lose the higher RPM gains.

Nothing substantial was noticed/felt/gained. Only lost. That was probably 2019 or so....I am finally getting around to swapping the Kelfords back in. To follow will be a Haltech wideband can box. Then an upgraded transmission. Then a proper tune. It's been a long time, but the truck has been neglected enough.

 

This swap went quite smoothly. It feels unfortunate that I likely won't use these techniques to help anyone else any time soon.
