Not sure if this has been addressed previously, but at 58,000 miles my 17 TRDOR was recently diagnosed with an oil leak from the timing cover. Because I had just passed the 60 month warranty period, it was not covered. After contacting Toyota customer service, they agreed to cover $2500 of the $4800 repair bill. The service rep insisted she had not heard of this problem before. Anyone else have this problem and how was it resolved?

Lol. That problem is all over the forum. If it’s under warranty, it’s covered, if it isn’t, it isn’t. Sorry about the luck, it’s an unfortunate problem and many choose to just let it leak/seep.

this is a well-known issue not only with tacoma's, but with other vehicles that use this motor.

i just noticed on mine what appears to be a leak. '22 with 37K miles. i don't want to look too hard. :)

i think it is a seep. i will have to clean it and see if it returns. unless it is wet and drips, i doubt i will have it fixed.

Just curious, is this problem with the V-6 only or is it a problem on the 2.7 as well?

New to TW... sorry to reopen old wounds. Looks like I'll take my $2500 and consider myself lucky (or not). I guess there's no chance of a recall or Toyota owning it.

don't worry about it....mine seeps too, 3 days a week I crawl under and wipe it down...takes 5 mins. I can't imagine how many are leaking and the owner's don't know. Was a VERY known problem at my dealership....

Nope. Also a chance of it happening again if it’s been repaired once already

lol I don’t know about that. I’ve followed the 3rd gen from before it even got delivered to dealers. There’s good and bad about them. I say seal it from the outside of the timing cover. Literally nothing to loose. Not to mention if you’re out of warranty! Why not!?

The fact that the service rep insisted she had not heard of this problem before suggests A. lying, B. new, C. both. Early model 3rd gens have had this problem many times. I have a 2016 (runs to wood to knock the shit out of it)

I have a 2016 I bought in November with 55K and discovered the timing cover seep two days after I brought the truck home. I got no help from the dealer either. But to be honest, I was not comfortable with having such an invasive repair done to the motor to stop the small seep. As mentioned above, some have leaked again after repair and others have had engine problems after the repair as it has to be done perfectly.

Just recently, I moved the power steering pump, clean the area and put permatex rtv on the seam as others have done on the forum. I’m keeping an eye on it, but it appears to have at least seriously slowed down the oil leak. Time will tell if it stopped it completely.
