The black rubber edges of my original fender trims are a bit worn down and I'd like to replace. What are some cool options for my early Gen 1 rig when it comes to fender flares / trims? Thanks!

If you've got the chrome trim pieces, just take them off. They aren't useful for much and the truck will be absolutely fine without them.

If you want larger flares, your best bet is to source some take-offs from a newer truck. Some early trucks (2000 and earlier, like the silver truck below) had fiberglass flares that stick out an inch or two. Later trucks (01-04, like the red truck below) had plastic flares that stick out farther. Either will bolt up fine, you'll just have to remove/replace/trim your mud flaps if you still have them.

Thank you @6P4 , this is just the info I'm looking for. The flares on that first picture (the silver Taco) are exactly the ones I'm looking for.

The later years have cutouts in the body panels for the plastic clips holding those flares on. You probably won’t be able to fit those onto your 96.

Mine came with flares (probably a dealer installed option) which share the bolt holes of the fender liners underneath. Not sure what brand they were and I am sure they are no longer made.

You are correct that the 01-04 flares use additional fasteners (which mate to additional holes in the body panels, photos below), but several forum members have reported running those fenders using only the lower mounts without issue. All 1st gens, regardless of year, have the same holes inside the wheel arches--those holes are used for the chrome trim strips, the fiberglass flares, or the plastic flares.

Those are factory-installed flares. They're the same flares pictured on the silver truck in my earlier post, just paint-matched to your truck. The paint matching was a premium option.

the early flares 97-2000 are actually TRD fiberglass flares that came from Toyota with the TRD package.
So any TRD package Tacoma from 97-2000 will fit that doesn’t use the clips in the fenders
