Mpg after 1000 miles on manual 4wd SR

Very satisfied with mpg on this truck. Been mostly highway driving but some city and idling time. I haven’t reset the mpg since I got it with 5 miles on the clock. Thus far, it’s reading 24.0 total mpg.

The mid-range trq feels like a 2nd gen with a 50 shot of nitrous. Huge improvement over the 2 manual 3rd gen Trd off roads I owned.

The reliability answer won’t come for some time… but thus far, this truck is a big step forward. I paid 38,700 for my truck. As close to bare bones as I could get…. Double cab SR 4wd manual. $3xx in options (all weather mats mudguards and deck rail cleats). A no nonsense spec, only thing I don’t like is lack of rear slider.

Yes. My understanding from TFL is they are very accurate, at least from their videos, but I still need to do a manual calculation to double check.

Thanks. I think it’s pretty clear these trucks are very overpriced, unless you are satisfied with an SR. I only wanted a manual trans as well, so this is another perk Toyota gave with the 24. The cost of ownership with this turbo 4 might be a wash when you factor in fuel saving over 200k miles.

 

Makes sense! I got an SR5 3rd gen because I wanted something reasonably priced and didn’t need all the fancy stuff.

 

You should try the Fuelly phone app. Really easy to use. Plug in odometer reading, number of gallons purchased, and price per gallon.

 

I wish more dealers would spec more Tacomas and Tundras like that. All they have on my local lots are the top-end trims that are out of reach for most and they are just sitting and sitting.

Yup. Everything around me are just loaded $46k SR5s and >$50k automatic TRDs. I wish there’s more manuals around me, they’re a bit cheaper and more fun to drive.

One dealer even tried to sell a SR5 for $4k over MSRP by just adding aftermarket leather seat covers. Pure robbery

 

Of all things to strip out of the SR and only apply with a package, BSM shouldn’t have been one of them. In this decade, BSM should be required by law on all vehicles, and Toyota could have done better and included it in all SRs like they did with TSS. I would rather have BSM than TSS in an SR.

Another thing I actually prefer is the old school leaf spring rear suspension on the SR. I do plan on towing 3500-4500 every 3-6 months and wasn’t convinced the coil would be as good as the progressive leaf design. Yes, the ride is more rough but hey… it’s a truck. I also think the 4 inch wheelbase increase has improved ride very slightly, regardless of trim.

Having driven 1000 miles I can assure folks that the front seat headroom and legroom are MUCH better than my 3rd gen and I’m not convinced the rear has any more or less legroom. Maybe the front seats go back farther. Granted the rear door is shorter but that has no direct influence on interior room.

 

You heard it here first, 4th gen is the best gen! Keep us posted with mpg and reliability. These 1st-3rd gens won't hold up forever.

 

What happened to the days where $38700 got you a fully spec’ed truck?

 

A better question is would you rather have a loaded 3rd gen for 40k or a base 4th gen with the long list of standard platform upgrades (e.g. fully boxed frame, more mid range power, etc)? I’ll take the base platform upgrades versus the 3.5 v6 third gen with leather interior even price being equal. I’ve never be a long option guy so perhaps my perspective is different than most….if Toyota would have offered manual roll up windows for a discount then sign me up (one less motor to break).

 

I got the same truck and I agree with you. This is my first Tacoma but so far it has been great. I don’t know about mpgs so much tho, ive been driving in sport mode and enjoying the throttle plenty.

 

I hadn’t thought about it until you pointed it out but you’re prolly right. I havent driven a vehicle with bsm before but I have noticed the truck has a nasty blind spot looking over your left shoulder. There is a backseat oh shit handle that eats up a a lot of your field of view through the back left passenger window.
