I few days ago, I bought a 2008 Toyota Tacoma SR5 V6 TRD Offroad, 5 speed automatic with 88,000 miles. The truck is in remarkably clean condition, considering it's 16 years old, & was allegedly rarely driven in snow. The frame & undercarriage are very clean by Ohio standards with very minimal rust.

The only issue I've noticed is a whirring that becomes noticeable around 30mph that continues to 70mph. It's loud enough at 70mph that it begins to compete with the radio at moderate volume. You can slightly feel it in the wheel.

I initially thought it could he a worn out muffler or tire noise, but, it doesn't change pitch when changing gears. The tires are 9 or 10 years old show some weather wear & will be replaced eventually.

I thought it could be wheel bearing so I performed a shake test & spun the front & back tires while the truck was jacked up, but they seemed okay.

The drive shaft does have some play near the carrier bearing, which I understand is an occasional problem.

The truck is parked until I narrow it down. Any other ideas?

    I appreciate it greatly!

What do the tires look like? I've seen tires that will sound similar to a bad wheel bearing if they get a bad wear pattern, typically it mainly happens with tires that have an aggressive tread pattern.

The tires are 10 years old & a little worn & weathered. I will be replacing them soon enough. They are stock size, 265/70/16 Firestone tires.

I ordered a Dana 5002007 carrier bearing, so well see if this helps.
