Locking shifter

I noticed there is no lock on my shifter. What would happen if the shifter was pushed into R by accident at highway speeds?

My dog accidentally pushed me into N but I wondered what would happen if he pushed just a little bit harder and it went into reverse.

Is that possible? Why is there no lock on the shifter?

 

There is a spring loaded detent requiring a force to the right before the shifter can be
Moved to the rev position.
That’s how they are made. The neutral condition also is normal.
If you are afraid of something like that then, for your piece of mind, move the offender to the back seat.
I don’t think it is a concern honestly as it requires a dual movement to engage.

 

I believe you do have to step on the brake to go into reverse but I could be wrong.

Ah ok, mines a manual so...

Alot of vehicles you have to but the Tacoma has a gated shifter so it makes sense to not require the brake.

 

There ya go.. That’s how they avoid another poss issue.

 

I had an old Plymouth Fury 3 with a push button transmission on the dash and shifted it into reverse doing 55. Lets just say it was ugly as the car started hopping all over the road and broke both motor mounts as the engine shifted forward into the radiator.

Not recommended!

 

That’s what you get for playing with buttons while driving lol.
I’m sure a few heartbeats were skipped..

 

If IIRC if you rev while going forward at speed the motor will instantly shut down.
