Do trucks make sense economically anymore?

I've heard any stolen Mopar products with the Hellcat engines are immediately totaled out by insurance companies if they're recovered. Lots of them end up at Copart type auctions with very minimal interior damage only.

I'd totally buy one over the 130k + markup dealer prices.

I think the previous owner either got mad or the tow truck company wasn’t careful because the drivers front tire was punctured and the wheel was damaged and there was some superficial scratches on the drivers door near the handle.

I've got a $600/monthly payment but the total interest of the entire loan is roughly $2K+.

Current monthly interest for balance of $14K+ is $25/month.

I'll be adding more principal payments (at least the interest amount) so that it gets paid off sooner.

 

I never needed 4wd until 2016 when I bought the 4Runner. It came in real handy a couple of years ago when the south froze over, and the lights went out. I had to do an emergency run to go get granny. I will always have at least one fully capable truck or suv after that.

 

I bought my 2007 Tacoma (SR5, dc, 4whl drive, jbl, long bed) new for $31k. I thought I paid out of the for it. Wife thought I was nuts. Oh, and sold it for almost 50% of what I paid (it was a cream puff.) I looked at numbers before I bought my 24 (and still think I paid out of the for it). However, the numbers are pretty much on target with inflation - might be off a tad.

 

How in the hell did you pay 31k for an SR5 back in 07? Your wife may have been right.

One of the first things I learned living in the mountain west is that you don’t need four-wheel-drive in the snow.

One thing I learned living in Hawaii is that you really don’t need four-wheel-drive on the beach if you’re smart enough to air down.

I paid 38K in 2018 for an OR. Some digits could have been transposed. It's OK. It happens to the best of us, especially as we age.

I can believe the sand thing but that’s ridiculous about the snow. I’ve seen 2wd trucks spin out and have to turn around and go home on snowy mountain trails when i was having no issue in 4hi

 

Doesn't make sense right now, that's why i chose to buy my Lamborghini with my 3rd quarter bonus check instead of paying off my 12,000sqft cottage in the Hamptons, that will have to wait until August unless i decide to take Jeff Bezos up on his offer to buy his yacht...? Oh decisions decisions.

it is safer, more capable, more reliable, and cheaper than that Hyundai.

Useless vehicles with 0 capability are a luxury for the rich.

 

Mountain trails, I would definitely want 4x4 myself. I do live in MA but I've driven my 2WD capably in snow all the time here.

I lived in the Colorado mountains for 10 years.

I saw Jeep bros in 4WD spin.

My friend in the Army drove a RWD Titan every winter with no issues.

What i learned after moving out west is, i thought i knew snow driving. Turns out i didnt know shit because they salt and sand the roads like a mf’er in Boston so when i came to NM where they dont salt and the plows might not come for a day…if at all…it’s a different animal haha

All but one of my 50 years here. Definitely easier nowadays with vehicles, the old ones didn't have the traction control and whatnot.

 

I think its a combination of inflation, and customer demands. Customers want more tech, more creature comforts, more features. I'd imagine a SR5 base model isn't very popular at dealers.

The starting price for a base model SR5 is about $31k, according to the official toyota website.
