Bed widening to fit 4x8 sheets

That's the beauty of my set up. No tools required. No extra parts to store, keep track of or not have with you when you need it. And it only takes seconds to change it over.

 

Gotta love the HD parking lot. I got to watch these bozos for like 20 minutes last summer.

 

Hardie plank is the most annoying thing, because it just breaks when unsupported

Same here, shaved 2x8’s fit really snug and I’m disinclined to accidentally use them as material for some other project.

 

Same worry here. I would be a bit bummed if I cut one by accident.

 

I've been using these chains for years (when the need arises). Store easy and always did the job. I've been using the "duty" 2x6 for the same period and never got around to notching a 2x8 for a perfect fit.

After seeing the Ford set-up - will have to look at the Taco and see if two more studs would make it do the same thing.

The spacing fits 2 2x4s and is close to 7”.

This might be super obvious and come on most pickup trucks of all makes!? but until i saw this thread, had not noticed those useful notches, and didn’t see it mentioned, maybe it’s in the manual somewhere unread by me

 

I put a slight angle at the ends, for even less movement, and to help avoid taking/reusing the 2x4s




over the wheels doesn’t really need it, cause it’s a deeper notch rest area, but somewhere between 5 and 8 degrees might match the slope of the side. Made the long side 57-1/8, and used a 5 degree angle, but it didn’t quite line up, fits anyway, and i don’t care and the notches over the wheels are way wider anyway.

for the 2x4s closest to the tailgate, i used about a 10 degree angle, [exact may be somewhere between 9 and 12 degrees) and made the longest side of the 2x4s 57.5” - it seems to fit nice and snug without being too snug, so i don’t have to hear anything shifting around.

if i have some out for something else, and remember, i might try spraying the ends with flexseal, plastidip, or similar to avoid noises or slight shifting, but also probably not really necessary.

For less than $10, for two 2x4x10’s, and a few minutes of measuring and cutting this is nice to have, and i’m glad i didn’t stay oblivious to these notches. Next, to copy the tailgate prop up support idea

My 15 ft long 2 ft wide computer desk is made of 2x4s and plywood sheets.

 

This is my simple contraption for hauling 4x8 sheets, works great.

I fitted a pair of 57 inch long 2 X 8 pt today. they measure 7 inch in width and fit the bed slots snug, and fully bottomed. Perhaps pressure treated stock is under nominal dimension. These boards were salvaged from a dismantled outdoor deck. They must be 20 years old, so maybe they shrunk ;-)

 

The short bed can carry 12 foot boards.
