2007 Tacoma 4.0l Manual

I've got some rust on the roof and I'm going to repaint. After stripping the rust and old paint I'm trying to decide what to use next. The trucks color is gloss black. Is it appropriate or OK to use cosmoline or POR 15 on the body. Both are available in gloss black. I don't much care how it looks so that's not an issue. If I did go this route would I still need to use a clear coat? Thanks.
