Car camping, really.

Hobos in scenic Portland, Oregon do it all the time on a budget. It's nothing new.

 

So it's minimalist overlanding...

 

If taking more than you can comfortably carry in a 16' canoe, on a mild flow river, with another person, for 3 days and 2 nights, and still successfully fish it might be called glamping.

 

Backcountry camping: camping off the beaten path in a ground tent or in the back of your truck. All you need is basic camping gear and a vehicle to get you where you want to go.

Overlanding: camping off the beaten path in a roof top tent or an expensive bed camper. In order to overland, the user must spend thousands of dollars on over-engineered and over-priced gear; in addition to adding unnecessary (and sometimes dangerous) weight to their vehicle. Black traction boards are frowned upon, as red and orange are the preferred color so people can spot you as an overlander without hesitation. Extra overlanding points goes to whoever can fit the most gear on the roof of their vehicle. An important question for the overlander to consider is: if one fails to post their adventures on social media, did they really go overlanding?

 

If Overlanding is really just car camping then isn't the Overland Expo just a car show?
