Were the canister oil filters NEVER installed? It only had the spin on model:
    Toyota Genuine Parts 90915-YZZD1

I just bought the canister and filter element from dealer (online) along with Fumoto valve and MotivX wrench to make life easier.

I believe the V6 gets the canister while the 4cyl gets the tried and true spin on model.

If that's the case, I'll be looking to get rid of the canister and filter element...

That's what I was told by a Toyota guy behind the parts counter. I have a V6 and hate the canister style. I find it to be messier and it takes more time. If it's true, consider yourself lucky. I'd crawl under there and see what you have though before you order more parts.

4-banger uses spin-on only. In regard to spin-on filters, Wix XP or Purolator Boss > OEM Toyota.

Your original post and follow-up are very confusing. If I am reading this correctly, you just acquired a 2018 2.7L and are questioning the type of oil filter.

    1) Your 2.7L Taco comes with a SPIN ON filter. Like this.
    upload_2024-5-1_16-42-29.png

The bottom has a 3/4" x 16 TPI (threads per inch) female thread inside and the filter is relatively small at about 3" round and 3.5" tall. It is super common. There are NUMEROUS makers of this oil filter because it is a standard (common) size used on countless vehicles. Wix, Fram, Bosch, AC Delco Denso, Ford Motorcraft and more make your filter. It is used on the Tacoma, Camry, Corolla and many other vehicles made by other manufacturers.

    2) This is different than a cartridge housing that holds an insert - where you typically only replace the paper insert and the O-rings. Most people will agree the SPIN ON filter is better because of its proven design, the shell is made of metal, the number of choices you have in terms of brand, it it is less messy to replace and more. You would generally not want to change from a SPIN ON to a cartridge filter because there is no reason to do so. You would have to change your oil filter housing and there's just no point

    3) Not to be a critic, but rather sharing information, you ordered a case of filters from Amazon labeled as "Toyota (Denso)". It appears to be the correct filter (good job) - but ordering parts from Amazon or FleaBay is most definitely NOT the same as buying from the dealership parts counter. The only place you can be 100% certain you are purchasing genuine OEM Toyota parts is from the dealership parts counter. Otherwise, they may be fake. The good news is you bought an entire case of 10 filters - which is an indication you intend to change the oil frequently - so that's a good thing.

HTH and enjoy your new truck!

I use the D3 on my 2.7L. It's a little larger, but fits fine. Available at WalMart, also.

Be happy you got the spin on! Quicker, easier, less messy.
I'll still never understand why Toyota kept using that 1950's technology canister filter.
My one piece of advice would be to get a cup type wrench to remove/install the filter. I got mine from Amazon for like $6-7.00. A 3/8" ratchet and a 10" extension and you're good to go. Makes life sooooo much easier.

Kind of funny how in 2024 the Tacoma went back to a spin on.

I've used both filter types. It doesn't make much difference to me. I seem to get covered in oil and dirt either way. :crapstorm:

There is no V6 option for 2024 so they didn't "go back" it's just stayed the same...I4s have the spin on
