My dealer has a just off the truck black Sport 6MT, took it for short drive. These 4th gen look really nice in person..

Just on the final fence as to whether I want to live with an MT. Never owned one before and that's probably why I stalled this one in reverse gear a few times...

My embarassment aside I want to hear from 3rd or 4th gen owners before I just say screw it. MTs may not be around forever and I want to say I least had one but how much am I going to regret it over the convenience of an auto...

How are out of town trips with these things?

Anyone ekse notice a grindy 1st to 2nd gear?

Anyways, hopng to hear from you gents soon.

Grindy shifting and stalling are not the trucks fault…

you better make up your mind on it before you commit …

Agree and I hope the grinding was just me. I figure i get it and I'm forced to get better at it. Hopefully before I fully burn the clutch.

I have personally never once preferred the convenience of an auto or wished I had one. I have driven many and owned one automatic, I will never go back for as long as I can hold out. I just can’t stand how they drive. You can’t complain about how it shifts if you are calling the shots.

The 1-2 shift on these trucks is a bit finicky but once you’re used to it, totally fine

Good luck. Maybe look up the cost of a clutch replacement before committing.

I would not be learning on a $50k truck, personally.

The clutch is not going to be destroyed from one person learning. It’ll be fine.

Takes practice man. But you'll get the hang of it.

I wouldn't say my 1-2 shift on my 3rd gen is grindy, but it is a bit rough. I'm not sure if that will work on the 4th gen, but on my 3rd gen I rev it a bit higher before shifting into 2nd so the shift is smoother.

Out of town trips is fine, just depends on how much traffic you'll encounter on cities (which even then it personally doesn't bother me much). Highway trips are easy since you'll just stick it in 6th once you get to speed and cruise.

Yeah +1 the clutch isn't gonna get destroyed. I've taught 10+ people on a S2000 and the clutch was still fine.

I sort of view clutches as wear and tear items like brakes... you'll need another eventually. Maybe a bit sooner than you would otherwise. I agree about the 50k learner vehicle in theory if space and cost of two vehicles was a non factor.

The MT is a big selling point when I got my 2022. I know it’s not a sports car, but it makes it more engaging to drive. I’m tempted for a 4G, am actually contemplating a long bed but don’t wanna give up the MT.

It is somewhat of a wear item, and on older gens the case was often that no matter how good of care you took to not wear out the clutch disc, the throw out bearing eventually started making a bunch of chirpy racket anyways….meaning you had to go in and repair it early despite giving the clutch itself your best care. So I wouldn’t worry about it too much, you’ll have to go in there when you have to go in there.

The new gen does have an updated throw out bearing and fork design, not sure why they changed the design but hopeful that will help prevent bearings. But still, none of it is worth worrying about. Spend a week fine tuning your feet and you’ll be just fine.

Going back for an extended drive after I help my wife with some errands and drop her off.

Just need to conquer this reverse gear before I sign anything. lol

Be glad, your 1st gear will be lower than the 3rd gen 1st gear, and your reverse gear will be the same ratio as the 3rd gen’s 1st gear. 3rd gen’s reverse gear is awful, so be thankful yours won’t be the same as that.

1st was very low! I could barely get around a parking lot in it. I was expecting this famous tall 1st gear but it was super short. Wanted to try a 2nd gear start but didn't have time, might try it when im back.

Yeah I regeared my 3rd gen to 5.29s, and essentially have the same final drive as the 4th gen in stock form for R, 1, & 2. It’s pretty low, but I like that. My V6 does not like starts in 2nd even with the lower gearing; requires too much revving and clutch burning for me to do that regularly.

I can’t give you MT Tacoma advice specifically, but I went from a MT6 Civic Sport to my Tacoma. I REALLY miss my MT even though it addresses the MT ownership issues.

-PITA to loan out to visiting offspring/relatives, and my wife is barely MT literate.

-PITA to multitask when driving a MT.

-I am MUCH harder on MT vehicles because pounding on a MT is rewarding and I have poor impulse control.

-Fuel economy is much lower because of the previous reason.

-Positives to a MT are almost strictly subjective, but the feeling of engagement with the vehicle and the sensation of operating a machine is addictive.

-My next vehicle will be a MT again if it’s offered, but they are drying up fast.

In my opinion, live your dream and get it. You won’t know until you try.

Had a reply drafted but this user covered it more or less ^^^

My last few cars were predominantly MT and I miss it as well, but where I live I was just growing tired of shifting 400 times before I even got to the highway from leaving my job. Even then, the enjoyment of one blast on the onramp was short lived before slamming on the brakes and crawling the rest of the way to work. Oh well.

Just get it IMO if you're on the fence. Worst case, you regret it, and I would struggle to think you'd have a hard time unloading a manual Tacoma.

Yeah I know for sure multitasking is a no go. Maybe thats not a bad thing. Pedestrians and cyclists crossing on a left hand turn with oncoming traffic would probably make me a bit more nervous but I'm sure that takes getting used to.
