Just do yourself a favor and ensure you can run said techniques correctly with both hands and both out of position

Just had to weld the tops of these recovery mounts as the top plate is already welded

Right hand, out of position push

lol, i do a lot of blind welding, where i can get the torch in between the two surfaces, but there's not enough space for me to see it!

I both blame and thank my last fab job; it had me do TONS of out of position welding and I wouldn't be able to knock this out easily if I didn't have to experience a lot of that

I do 4 x 8 but cold rolled 16 gauge here is $67 total, with $5 per shear but free shearing for me since I'm a disabled vet

    @soggyBottom

I'm not doing a welding test but just an example as to why bend tests are done and why this practice is done a lot with fab work

The red depicts the bevel, and the yellow flat spot is called the landing

    20240504_125408.jpg

You will mate two pieces that are done just the same with a small gap between the landings

The landing maintains some thickness and allows for a nice even area for weld deposits to collect and fuse both pieces together

The beveled area allows one to fill and better fuse everything together

    What's a 4 x 8 of cold rolled out there?

And is there any place else you can use?

That's more than double the cost here :bananadead:

there are a couple other places, one I have used before and they are sometime a lot cheaper then the usual place. I found another place south of town, but they also deliver small orders, but both of them are closed for the weekend

Makes sense; none of the shops I use/used are open on weekends

Tons of locations, but all Mon thru Fri only from like 6 or 7am to 4 or 5pm

    Two quick questions

    1. Can you mig steel with straight argon in a pinch? I always seem to run out of gas on weekneds and am looking to get a second bottle. The reason for 100 would be to practice tig and spoolgun aluminium.

    2. Where do you guys buy abrasives? I used to order from empire but I needed some quick and got benchmark off Amazon. They seem much better.

    1. Nope, it'll be brittle

    2. Benchmark abrasives is what I run

the guys in my shop call it my 'batman mask'.
    https://www.amazon.com/Meonum-Automatic-Darkening-Adjustable-Sensitivity/dp/B0CLH13XHQ/

i rarely use it, but it gets passed around to different people during the week because the lower profile can make a huge difference in getting in some really tight and uncomfortable spots normal masks don't get close to.

    Those look cool!

Although I might get shit for saying this, I'd rather be awkward running something I can trust my eyes to!

I wear my hood in even the worst positions, otherwise I'm welding blind and no hood is needed at all.

I want to get a mig welder . I used to be an ironworker and I've always just run stick , which is what my current rig is , but I'd like to get a mig. I always stayed with stick because its what i know but I have some house projects it would be good for but am intimidated by wire speeds and gas etc.

If you can run stick, MIG will be far easier as it's the easiest welding process out there and anyone can do it.

If you can stick run a bead with a new, 12" rod, MIG is gonna be cake. You got this.
