I had a similar mount out of a 2x8 that was ratchet strapped into the D rings, but I was never happy with it.

I saw someone on here that used a plywood base and made wedges that would lock it to the bed, so that got me working on this. Instead of wedges, I found using 1x8 pine and some large hitch pin clips (I think Hillman 3.25" long) works about perfect. Since these photos I have sanded it down, and I will eventually paint it. Total cost for the base was 10$. Of course the mounts were more expensive (Saris traps).

Nice elegant solution and the best part, looks like it all disappears when you're back home and the outing is over. Please post pics with the bikes attached when you get a chance.

One other detail, the Saris traps allow 4 different axel types (even more if you want to stretch the application to fatbikes), but they need to be flipped around to accommodate the bike without interference with the brake caliper. This rack is perfectly symmetric about the center line, so it can go in forwards or backwards depending on which bikes I am hauling.

And I have a gfc topper, so removing the front wheel is necessary for clearance to the roof panel. I'll snap a pic of a bike mounted tomorrow.

I went to put a drop bar bike on this morning for a picture, but I found the brakes interfere with the GFC rear door. Last year I didn't have to topper, so I didn't think that would be an issue. So back to the drawing board. I'm pretty sure flat bar would be OK. Worse case is making different locations for the mounts on the 1x8.
