Tonight when going up a hill the traction control and check engine light came up and we had 0 pick up. You can feel the engine wanting to move but won't. This came out of no where. No work has been done to the truck and it has about 173k miles on it. Any ideas?

Need to see what code(s) you have first otherwise we're just guessing.

Those are for the Secondary Air Injection Switching Valves being stuck open, this will put the truck into limp mode.

Pretty common for this to happen on 2012 v6 models, there was an extended warranty of the SAIS components for 2012 but I believe it has expired for all trucks at this point.

You need to take the cover off the SAIS pump and check the filter first (search UNI Filter mod).

    You have a few options:

Try to take the valves apart and clean them.

    Replace the valves.

Install the @hewitt-tech SAIS bypass kit (note if you are in an emissions testing area this may not be an option)

Put a tune in and turn off the codes for the SAIS (again may not be an option if your are in an emissions testing area).

I have had to have the secondary air pump replaced twice now on a 2014 Tacoma. The service tech said it was because I put less than 5000k on the truck in the last year. I am pretty sure he was talking out of his nether region on that. Of course the first repair was after warranty from the first time. I have seen the filter mod and the bypass kit(out of stock atm). Not sure if I can get away with the bypass kit in CA. Does anyone have any tips they could share? Thank you in advance.

The alternative to the unifilter is to just buy foam of similar shape to the original part and to regularly swap it out. You can also try to source the OEM foam but I think it comes with a replacement cap and is kind of a waste of money to buy it that way.

At very low miles on my '14 the valves on my SAIS carboned-up to the point of sticking and triggering the limp mode. This happened to me while way, way off road and I ended up limping out very slowly, and very mad.

I now consider the SAIS system on mine a maintenance item and open the valves -- and clean them -- at about 30k mi. intervals. I keep a few small parts. Come to think of it, its about time to take another look....

Thank you 2015WhiteOR, I will look into that. I expected more out of my taco with less than 60K miles on it. I asked the guy how many miles do I need to drive it 5001 or 80k in a year, Couldn't answer of course. Did not have a good answer. Anyone hear of a recall/service write up for models other than the 2012?
