When you say "drive it back," you mean from doing something... ummm... adventurous, but poorly thought-out offroad?

Warning to new members- never post a help needed question here on a Friday!! Take it with a grain of salt though, we all mean well.

OP: sorry for your loss. Hopefully the shop that over tightened your oil filter housing will help out. It’s an expensive lesson and we hope you get it running soon without too much of a headache.

back in late 90s I worked at a nissan dealer, a young tech didn't snug up a oil drain plug on an infiniti. Oil went flinging down the road as car drove off, needless to say nissan put in a new engine.

I doubt that the OP will find success with this unless a rare customer-oriented shop with supreme ethics did the work. 1) It would be hard to prove that the work caused the crack, and 2) the owner's actions after discovery would be considered abuse.

I'd like to see this guy do a tear-down of this engine: https://www.youtube.com/@I_Do_Cars

I beg to differ. It does not even take that long for an engine to fail with No Oil Pressure. It happens in as little as 10 seconds. Once the hydro-dynamic layer of oil film (which is there by pressure due to the oil pump and oil volume) is lost, the heat between the rotating surfaces increases instantly and exponentially. Piston rings crack, cylinders warp, bearings fail and more.

This reinforces why one must *instantly* pull over and *instantly* shut off the engine when the idiot light comes on.

    -------------------------
I worked in the Oil & Gas industry as a petroleum engineer for 30 years for a Big Oil company. All of our critical rotating equipment had:

    1) Oil level safety low alarms that would be set usually around 50% of the intended level in the crankcase.
    2) Oil level safety low automatic shutdowns that would usually be set around 20% of the intended level in the crankcase.

Ditto for pressure and temperature and sometimes also flow rate. Super critical equipment even had "auto level refill" capability from an external tank for protection in instances such as when certain types of machines were known to consume oil even in normal operation.

This was an operational tenet of ours. We never, never, ever, never allowed a piece of rotating equipment to operate without lubrication.

I wish I could get everyone on this form to think like this.

My point is not to come across as a know-it-all, but to shed light on the fact that the automotive industry leaves a LOT to be desired in terms of monitoring, displaying and controlling oil pressure and volume. Verbal alarms like "LOW OIL PRESSURE or LEVEL, PULL OVER AND TURN OFF ENGINE NOW" could easily be programmed and added for practically no incremental cost. Radio shuts off and hazard lights come on inside cabin. Install actual dial indicator pressure and temp gauges. Not just some idiot gauge that pegs in the middle as long as it is within a specified range. I could go on, but you get the point.

    Apologies for the length.

    Correct on both points.
Unfortunately today's engines and pricing will have everyone running away from any part of this.
2- not pouring salt in the wound, but you are right, I wouldn't blame a shop here. They could have made it right, sent a tow truck, installed a new cap, filter, and oil for a few hundred bucks,,,, but for the OP to drive it flat out of oil on the warning light/buzzer was on them and a 5 figure lesson in life.

Agree 100% on the desire for good old fashioned dial indicators. I want data not a pass fail idiot light.

Since it’s early on a Saturday morning, let me share this. Many years ago while in High School back in Indianapolis, my friend and I changed the oil on my 67 AMC Ambassador. A few hours later after driving this junker around, I smelled something burning and the radiator was boiling over. Woops! We didn’t get the oil filter tight. I drove it home (stopped by a Western Auto store to buy more oil on the way), tightened the filter (it was really lose), hosed off the oil mess, added some new 10-40 (added the several quarts we had purchased) and it drove as if it never happened. Guess they don’t make them like that anymore.
