Starting with truck related content. Pay no attention to the distortion. I was using a wide angle lens low on a tripod

    DSCF8941-Enhanced-NR.jpg

Took me a bit to figure out what camera settings worked. I had to really crank up the ISO and use a <1 second shutter speed.
These were taken at 2:30 am in Caledonia.

The balance of long enough shutter speed for enough light and short enough to avoid star trails is fun. Wide aperture and bumping the iso [I usually rock like, 1600ish] is probably the best bet unless you want to get wild with a tripod head that rotates/moves.

fwiw i shot mine at 16mm [aps-c crop body] at f1.4, 3ish seconds at iso 400ish since it was super bright.

I was using my 11-16 f2.8 Nikon mount lens on my Fuji which is also aps-c. I ended up cranking the ISO to 10,000. Usually I limit that to 3200. The AI noise reduction in Lightroom is pretty amazing. At the time I was out longer shutter speeds just made the sky look like watercolors.

I always seem to buy the red headed step child Fujis. I have the SX-10. I was ready to buy the XT-4 but when I was reading reviews of the SX-10 it had everything I needed for a lower price.
I also have a Fuji X-70 point and shoot I love for street photography/urban landscape.

What really drew me towards Fuji is the quality of the jpegs. I like the simpler workflow of uploading to a iPad and posting out to social media for most of my shots.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Unbelievably, they were not lol. Me and my sister were dumbfounded that we drove that far just for them to be visible when we got home...
Oh yeah, been going to that since I was a kid, I recommend using binoculars when looking at it.

Speaking of driving that far, even though we didn't see any northern lights in the UP, core memories were made. I'll start with this picture to set the tone lol.
    20240511_002922.jpg

So, taking dirt roads you're not familiar with after rain in the middle of the night with next to no reception is not the smartest thing a fella can do. The road was muddy and bumpy but nothing too terrible. Until I lost steering lol. The slippery ass clay finally got me. Caked up the tires so thick that I started veering right while on a straight stretch. Experience gained over the years made me coast to a controlled stop to think before making any rash decisions. Tried backing up to get away from the nasty ditch on the right. No go. Try back forward. Nope, still going towards the ditch. Hmmmm. Air down time. In 4low with 10 psi idle crawling was able to get to a spot to turn around. I really needed wheel speed to clear out the tires but gassing it anywhere would have been a one way ticket to the ditch with the clay racing slicks I was rocking. Took like half an hour of idle or JUST above idling crawling to go like a 1/4 mile before I could gun it and clean the treads out. Less scary but still scary the rest of the way out. Insult to injury was no northern lights the entire time. Obviously adventure was had and memories were made so it wasn't a waste, but damn if the northern lights not being out when I went further north sure was strange. Glad I finally got to see them though.

    Rest of the pictures:

Really? That’s disappointing. I wonder if they were less bright because they were so expansive. Not sure if that’s a thing though…if they get “diluted” when they get that wide. I mean, they have to be brighter at times right?

I managed to taken some pics last night of them last night. They were faint, but they covered more than half the sky. The pics I took are deceptive…they’re way too impressive compared to what I actually saw. Phone cameras now seem give you “magic” pictures with 5-10 sec off-hand exposures. A little too magical if you ask me. At least the water color effect @Camerasandcoffee mentioned was pretty strong, so the pics shouldn’t be able to pass as a technically good pic taken by someone putting in a little effort.

I’d like to see some bright aurora at some point. Up near the poles some claim you can hear them, which is pretty trippy.
