Best Chep Tie Rod Ball Puller?

Which one would you buy?

 

What exactly is a "Tie Rod Ball Puller?" If all you are doing is pulling a tie rod end, all you need to do is remove the cotter pin and castle nut on the tie rod end, then smack the female portion that it goes into with a BFH. The tie rod end will pop right out.

 

Mine are always tight as hell and don't like wanging away with a hammer potentially damaging the threads or nut.

 

I use a pickle fork for last 40 years Ball removal never been so easy with one smack!

 

And if the pickle fork doesn't work for you, rent a ball joint puller from your auto parts store of choice.

 

Even a pickle fork which I have can damage the boot. Does one of

A pickle fork destroyed the boots on my tie rod ends when I installed my lift.

 

If the pickle fork doesn't work for you, that is the next logical step.

 

I have a set similar to this. It works pretty well.

 

In all of my years working on cars, I've never damaged the threads, boot or nut with the method I recommended. In fact, I usually leave the nut on, but just a few threads loose. This not only eliminates the possibility of damaged threads, but things don't come flying off either. To each his (or her) own.

 

Best and cheap usually don't go together. But I'd say my purse is the best thing to pull a tie rod.

 

You don't strike the threads, nor the nut. You strike the part of the component where the tie rod presses into. A regular hammer will do, and firm repetitive strikes over hard blows is preferred. That being said, I have a pitman arm puller that fits nicely over my tie rod to help remove it. I still have to do some striking, but the puller allows for lighter strikes.

Did you use the right size to only grab the shoulder?

A bigger tool isnt always the best

 

If you're a DIYer, there's no reason to not own these sets
