4l 4h and neutral all work normally, 2Wd feels like it’s in 4L

Transfer case shifts into 4l, 4h, neutral, and into 2wd. But 2wd feels like 4L shifting into 5th gear between 30/40 mph.
    4H drives normal speed…
To narrow down the issue I removed front drive line.

    97 Tacoma, 2.7 l
Manuel trans, transfer case, Manuel locking hubs.

Any input would be appreciated thanks

Slipping clutch? Slipping clutches always show themselves first in the higher gears because those are the gears that put the most load on the clutch.

No runs through every gear well. It has to be something in regards to the transfer case, I just don’t know what would be the issue and what to do to fix it.

it’s as if when I push forward into 2wd it is going into 4low

Its either in L or H, it cant be variable. As BLtheP says possible slipping clutch. Do the gears feel normal 2wd range... untill higher gear or speeds? That would be the obvious issue then. You cant have high and low gears together.

Shifting through the gears smoothly does not mean that the clutch isn’t slipping. You say it feels like it’s in low when you get to 5th gear. To me, I hear that as the rpm’s are going higher than normal, only in 5th gear. That is a slipping clutch. Maybe we are misunderstanding based on the description, in that case I’d need to see a video of what it’s doing. The t-case can’t shift to low at high speeds, so you’re either in low or high.

    4 l works as normal
    4 h works as normal
2wd is like driving in 4 low

no slipping clutch, bites hard and smooth through every gear.

so I’m driving in 4h so I can drive normal speeds, with front driveshaft completely disconnected.

So, for clarification, when you are in 2wd, the rpms are super high, like you're driving in 4L? In all forward gears?
