Hello all, so I know this has been asked before but I’d like some suggestions from people with experience. Phoned around and talked to multiple local dealers and some recommend 4.88s and some recommend 5.29s so I’m a bit undecided.
My truck is a 2023 Tacoma
    -automatic
    -double cabe long box
    -has a roof rack
-steel front bumper and a winch
    - 2.5in lift with toyo at3 33’s
    -OTT tuned
This truck is a weekend warrior and a daily driver. I live in Canada BC. I do a lot of highway driving as I work out of town and climb some steep mountains while on the highway. I was originally concerned about my speed being governed by the computer as our highway speed limit is 120km but people go 140km often but with the OTT tune it is able to bypass this. My concern is simple, is 5.29 gears over kill for this location and set up? I already have G2 5.29s with arb front and rear lockers sitting at my place but am unsure if I should install these or get 4.88’s. Thanks for reading.

For 33’s, 4.88’s should be more than fine!

5.29 no matter what for mountains. The fact that yours is auto makes it pretty much 5.29 no matter what anyways. 33’s pushes it even more so.

especially since you already have the 5.29s!

I have 4:88's with close to the same setup only I have the off-road. The 4:88s are great for the highway and sprinted driving, but the 5:29s are better for driving at low speeds with the gears holding you back. The lower gear reduction physically holds you back while crawling, on slippery roads, etc. You don't need to sit on the brake as much. Since you have the SR5 without crawl control, then I'd say go for it. Don't worry about the highway driving as you can always go into 6th gear. And from what the folks on the 5:29 thread say, 5:29s are fine for highway driving and actually make the 6th gear useable. Let us know how it works out. And, Welcome to TacomaWorld!
