Re the poll:

The wadded up newspapers is a real thing.
I have a "grill" specifically for that... Mrs Gritto got it for me way back.
It's like a little sheet metal half drum with holes around the bottom and a small circular grill on top with a handle.
Ultra cheap.

It actually works for some things that only need a quick sear, though it's not brilliant

 

Not grilling at all is plenty lazy for me.
