I suspect the sender isn’t moving correctly anymore and sticking.

scalleywag was this issue ever found? I am having the exact same issue. Same year same model. 2 new delphi pumps with same results. Gauge is accurate above 1/4 tank. Gauge stops at 1/4.

kinda late to this party but the reference voltage to the fuel sending unit is too high if it's doing this! the orange wire should only have 5v! if you have 12v your gauge cluster is bad and needs to be replaced or you may have a wire chaffed into the orange wire that is sending 12v. HTH

With life, work, family and other projects I’ve basically learned to rely on my scangauge like many others with this issue have.
I’d like to dig back into it sometime. My truck definitely has an odd issue that’s influencing this symptom.

I recently had a humbling experience, I’ve been a mechanic for the past 24 years, worked on everything from leaf blowers to world war 2 fighter aircraft.

The dome light on my Tacoma wouldn’t come on when the door was open, I knew the bulb had burned out so I went ahead and bought a really overpriced LED replacement.

A week later the replacement arrives, I took the minute and a half needed to install the new bulb and the result was no different than before, still wouldn’t work. That’s when I looked and saw that the dome light switch was off…..

Experience can be great, but it doesn’t mean you can’t screw up! Often, it leads me to want to explore a more unlikely scenario than starting with the basics on my diagnoses.

I said all that to say this, the new LED dome light never turns off. It’s always illuminated. When I close my door and walk away for 2 hours I can still see it dimly illuminated. That tells me I likely have trace voltage on the ground side of my truck. Not sure if a diode has failed or maybe I have a small abrasion on a wire causing a short to ground, but either way on a micro voltage circuit like the fuel gauge, voltage on the ground would definitely cause issues.

When I get time, the next thing I’ll investigate is that trace voltage causing my dome light to stay on dimly.

    Thanks for the reply!
