You might try turning back on all the safety features to see if the triple honk stops. Also, does a scan tool show any weird codes? One more thing to try is unhook the negative battery cable for a minute to see if that helps. Good luck.

It did it when all those safety features were turned on, I had hoped turning them off would eliminate it

Is it possible someone installed some device as a practical joke?

If you have any friends or family members capable of creating such a device, yes. It seems like a type of joke some of my friends might play on me.

Maybe a bad door latch? Not familiar with 3rd gen but I have another vehicle that tripple honks when you open and close the door when keys inside.

Often cars will do this if it does not register the key, but has already been unlocked and started.
It’s possibly that the key battery is dying, or signal is hidden while this is happening.
Or maybe an issue with the trucks antenna.

edit: source, my years at a Toyota dealer, working valet, and being a tech.

In any case, I think @Rock Lobster had the best suggestion. Determine under what conditions the truck is supposed triple honk and then determine why that mechanism is misbehaving.

I personally know of no legitimate reason for a triple honk, but that by no means there isn’t one.

Have read about other newer toyota models possibly having issues with anti-theft module..

if it's an aftermarket alarm, it's entirely possible a botched installation is causing a loose connection, which makes the alarm go through various modes that could sound the horn.

It really sounds like you have a short somewhere. Can you correlate it to happening when you go over bumps? Take a look at the horn wires itself. Does it have a good ground, etc.

I read a lot of complaints (other brands) focused on the remote being the root of some seemingly-random oddities.
Button presses from being in a purse or front pocket.
    Frequency interference.
    Losing sync with vehicle.
    Dying battery.
    Etc.

To rule out the remote, you can do a few things... If you have two functioning remotes, switch to the other one and see if the problem still happens.
    Refresh the battery.
You could also invest in a small faraday pouch and keep the remote in it while you're driving.

There were other good suggestions in this thread. But those remotes can really play some head games.
And don't even get me started on a car I used to own that had a factory integrated Viper alarm and immobilizer. That was the devil.

I had an older Honda once that would honk everytime the driver got pissed off.

    Sorry, it's my Friday
