Howdy folks. I've got a 97 2.4L 5 speed manual that started to shake at idle then shortly after at higher rpm. I would describe it between a shake and vibration but is very prominent (mirrors, windows, and doors vibrating.) Coolant level was also found to be low but not empty and slightly cloudy. Also when shutting the engine off WHILE the engine is stopping there is a clunking noise but stops as soon as then engine stops turning. I've replace PCV valve, cleaned mass air flow sensor. Tested Radiator pressure and found it dropped roughly 1.5 psi over 15 min. I've also replaced plugs and wires and fresh oil change. I can't find anything online with the shaking/vibration and only idle and high rpm. Any help is appreciated! (also idles between 650-850rpm)

I checked engine mounts and they are pristine. Also since it's a manual I've ruled out the transmission because wether or not the clutch is engaged there's still the vibration with no change

I don't have a 4 banger or manual so hopefully someone with closer experience will jump in here

Motor and or transmission mount would be my first look see.

Use a bar to pry the engine and see if a mount is broken. They can look good and still be broken

Transmission mount same. Clutch position is insignificant to the mount, as the trans is bolted to the engine.

    Scanned for codes?

    Any recent work done?

If I remember correctly there is a gear driven balance shaft on these motors. I have heard of the driven gear on the shaft wearing as it is non-metallic.

    (Update) Did compression test and results are as follows Cylinder 1: 115, 119. Cylinder 2: 125, 120. Cylinder 3: 141, 143. Cylinder 4: 107, 119.
Numbers are from tests 1 and 2 respectively. Also did combustion leak test with dye and got a little yellow coloration at the top of the bubbles but the liquid stayed blue before and after settling.
I scanned for codes about 10 times now and come up with nothing. I'll send pics of scanner reading the sensors in a sec and check engine mounts. Thanks for the help so far.

Interesting. I’ve heard rough idle can be valve clearances, has anybody ever been in there and adjusted them?

Throwing ideas out since motor and trans mounts ruled out

Your idle seems a bit high. You are in CL with an ECT of 81c
Does the ECT ever make it to about 86c?

Even at 81c, the idle should be closer to 650-700 rpm.

Your LTFT show you are slightly rich.
But that could be the high idle?

    I've also never seen SHRTFT12?

Can you get better O2 data?

I set the throttle to idle higher to reduce the vibration at idle for now. It was idling between 650 amd 850 before. I can try to get better 02 data. Not sure about ECT's will have to get some more info from the scanner while driving. It's my partners vehicle and parked at her house so will get am update tomorrow. Will also be attempting to check valves as well
