I really wouldn't hold up 'European engineering' as a shinning example. German quality/build fell off a cliff straight down the shitter starting 20+ years ago.Fiat? Laughable. Anything French? Oh, please. English? No thank you....
I fully expect my 2.7 to last and thrive well past 300K. At half the price of repairs and maint. ....

Call me crazy, but I love everything about my '23 TRD Off Road. Including the engine and transmission.

Love me a I4. Just think how great it would be if Toyota put a modern NA I6 in a Tacoma. Like the one used in past Gen Land Cruisers.

3 years into the new Tundra and they still haven’t ironed out the “1st year” issues. And that doesn’t even get into reliability yet, that’s just the quality, design and production issues. I’ll keep my NA V6 for several years before I’d have any faith in a “just-as-reliable” turbo.

I'm holding out for the new FJ. But I'll keep my Taco as it does what I need it to do.

If the 4G is better than the 3rd gen? Wouldn't the Tundra be better than the 4G?

Like an actual FJ, or an FJ Cruiser? One will never exist again, and the other was a piss poor attempt to capitalize on the former's reputation. Might as well move on.

Have you ever owned an FJ Cruiser? I had an 07 FJ Cruiser (I just gave it to my son) and it was one of the coolest and most capable off road vehicles I have ever owned.

No, I haven't. But, it's just a 4Runner shortened by a few inches. If you really think it's amazing, you could get a 5th gen 4Runner, and have the same capability without feeling like you're driving a giant football helmet around.

Kind of apples and oranges there. The only commonalities between the T24A and V35A is that they both have turbos, both run on fuel, and both were made by the same company.

That one has been a semi large failure doesn’t mean the other will. They are quite different in design. The wastegate issues in the Tundra shouldn’t carry over to the Tacoma because it’s a different design, vacuum actuated vs electric. The engines blowing could be something to consider, however two turbos is a lot more added torque over the base engine and you’re concentrating that force onto a crankshaft with 4 main bearings, while the 4 cylinder will have 5 mains simply due to its design. Of course we hope Toyota strengthened all of them to handle what they are supposed to but the 4 cylinder block being under the stress of only one turbo and having more bearings to carry the load might make it significantly more reliable.

Time will tell, but at the moment the two are not really relatable for comparisons. I do agree Toyota has taken way too long to fix the now 1st three year issues in the Tundra and I would never consider buying one, even if there are a bunch out there that are fine. Needing to remove the cab to work on any turbo is a bit of a kick in the nuts since most DIYers don’t have that capability. So, it at least needs to be a reliable design at the minimum.

I have all sorts of opinions about what it’s like to sleep with five Lakers Girls at once.

Have I done it? No. But gather round the campfire and listen to my thoughts on why it sucks…

YotaWerx 2.1 gives the 2GR-FKS torque down low where it needs it and top shelf power up top. I have a strong feeling many will forget about the new 4 banger :0)

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
    Yes.

    My old 1986 F150 4x4, straight 6, 300ci.

My best truck to date and not even close. 13 years with that truck, zero issues. Oil changes, brakes, and drove it hard off road every weekend and every holiday. What low end grunt. Pop the clutch in 4-lo first gear, and get out and walk beside the truck, uphill or down.

Steepest downhill grades and I had to give it gas to get it to move. No braking required unlike my 2016 TRD Off Road where I have to constantly ride the brakes downhill in 4-lo first gear.

It made my Crawl Control look just damn silly.

God how I yearn for a truck like that again. I don’t need any technology or comforts in a truck for off road.

Just need a basic, simple truck but no one makes them anymore.

I mean, there has been a sporadic line of the 3.5 V6's "blowing up" so the beloved V6's aren't without their faults as well. Happens to every manufacturer. So those worried about the new I4 turbo blowing up need to hit the blown engine thread in this sub forum...
