It still shifts in and out being an 8 speed, but you never notice it, it's that smooth once warmed up. I think the biggest thing is the powerband is much more down low. We have a Camry with the 8 speed and it shifts more due to lack of torque down low. The 4th gen does have a more aggressive engine breaking programming compared to the 6 speed.

maybe.....i would consider one when it comes time for a new one, provided they still offer the 6-foot bed. i'd really like to see the colorado or canyon with a 6-foot bed.

My personal theory on this is incorrect oil viscosity and too long of an OCI. I could be wrong. Issues will reveal themselves as the 3rd gen ages further.

We can’t stop progress. Trucks 5-10 years from now are gonna make our 3rd gen’s look old and out dated. I am old enough to remember how we moved from 8 track tapes to cassette tapes to CDs to streaming devices. What’s interesting is that all of those audio systems were in vehicles that have transitioned through the years. Got better with time. Passing time changes everything and we can’t stop it. Turbos and more batteries are here to stay.

Totally relate to the audio example here.

Strong rumors yes, but nothing official from Toyota so far.

I think it would be cool to see an updated FJ cruiser with four doors something to compete with these little broncos, driving all over the place

People are all “sweaty” about the I4 turbo.

I’ve owned three I4 turbos, and a flat 4 turbo over the years. Even with substantial abuse (but religious OCI with good oil) I never blew up a turbo on any of them. All were tuned and/or modified with bigger turbos and intercoolers. Proper maintenance and good fuel is the key.
The only one I had an issue with was my Legacy GT with the EJ255 engine. I cracked a piston from too much boost (21-24 psi on E85) and those EJ engines were kind of delicate for the kind of power you could get from them.
I am 100% confident Toyota did their homework on that power plant and as long as tuner’s don’t push them to the limits they will probably hold up well. My advice is wait a year or two and see.

I don’t think the OP needs to hate or be “sad to say” any of that. No need to have any loyalty to any specific generation of truck. My 2023 is the worst driving truck I’ve ever owned. I knew it drove like crap before I bought it but it suits my needs for lots of other reasons not related to drivability. I was planning on waiting until the 4th gens came out but circumstances dictated I buy a new truck a little earlier. So I got a 3rd gen with the intention of only keeping it a year or so. Before that I was driving a 2000 LX470 and before that a 2nd gen Tacoma. The 3rd gen is the worst of the bunch. It’s a fine truck for it’s utility, reliability, comfort, longbed length, etc… but I hate the way it drives. I’ll be shopping for a 4th gen as soon as the camper shell companies get their production ramped up.

Recent times. They over engineer them.

Those 80s Mercedes with a diesel are absolutely bulletproof.
