Hello - Apologies in advance if this has been answered a billion times. First time Tacoma owner and new here. Having a very hard time confirming whether my 2023 TRD Off ROAD 4x4 V6 has a tow package or not. Yes, it has the hitch receiver and pin connectors, and engine oil cooler. Is that the totality of what is considered the tow package? It's my understanding that the transmission cooler was discontinued in ~2020? In any case, just trying to confirm whether I have tow package or not. Thanks very much!

Edit: thank you all for the quick replies. I don’t have a concern, per se, as opposed to simply wanting to understand whether there were additional options for a “tow package” I could’ve equipped but did not. Planning on towing a teardrop trailer, ~2.5k lbs non dry weight a few times a year.

I don’t believe there has been a tow package for many years now. If you have the factory tow hitch, you are likely golden. Assuming you have the v6, I think the primary difference was the electronic sway control which I think now standard. What is your concern?

There are also lots of threads about the transmission oil cooler being discontinued and/or replaced.

When I bought my 2016 there was a toe package which I asked the salesman about. He replied that no dealer would order one without that package. When I bought my 2020, I don’t think it was listed as an option anymore.

I have heard there are some i4 SR’s out there without a hitch and regardles I think they still have the 3500lb instead of the 6700lb tow rating. I could be wrong.

If your truck is a 20+ automatic, you don't have the auxiliary transmission cooler anymore. You still have the transmission cooler that is imbedded into the radiator.

Although I can't speak if you should add an aux transmission cooler or not. I never towed with an automatic.

If your truck is a manual, you never had nor needed a transmission cooler.

And yes, you do have the tow package. They became standard on 4WD V6 Tacomas starting from 2018, as well as the 2WD TRD Sport and Off-Road.

This in BOLD I have seen in my truck since I have an 2021 Sport/AT.

You'll need a brake controller (if it hasn't been mentioned) for sure.

I haven't towed yet and I won't tow max 6800 pounds...if anything, 4500-ish pounds is the happy medium with this V6.

+1 on a brake controller. A lot of trailers use electric brakes which requires a trailer brake controller to use them.

Tacomas with a tow package already come with a plug for aftermarket brake controllers, making them easy to install.

REDARC makes a kit that's easy to install.

Strange it was discontinued in mid production year. Trucks manufactured prior to March 2020 did include them.

Why is it not strange that an automaker would quietly delete a package item that was included for a very long time..an item that tons of people add back on.

And do it mid-model year, also.

To remove that feature during a production model rather than waiting until the next year, seems strange.

Although I don't know the reason they decided to discontinue it, so maybe there is logic behind it. :notsure:

no, it’s rather common. Manufactures change stuff midyear quite often. Once the bean Counters see that there’s a savings without an item or a process, it is gone.

remember, they make vehicles to make money, they don’t make vehicles to make us happy or provide us quality transportation. It’s all about the money. Everything they do positive or negative is all about the money.
