    Don't manually shift it.
Put into S and move it down(-)to display S3; let the computer do the shifting.

I have the same issue when the truck is cold. It shifts hard and downshifts hard when it's really cold. Noticed it this morning when it was 12 degrees outside

You can use it either way; gear limiter or gear shiter.
To eliminate the human factor in troubleshooting, use it as a gear limiter.

Got hit with this today with a vengeance. Transmission has been fine or maybe i've been used to it since 2016. Had local Toyota shop do drain and fill a month back and it this has been slowly starting to creep up. This morning when cold got a violent downshift and lost ability to shift up until it warmed up. So I'm going to guess they really under-filled me. Dropped it off to service. Fluid was black when they changed it. Charged me for 16 quarts which I know is way over what this thing holds. Wondering how F-d I might me now? But for what it's worth once warmed up it drives fine.
