So I decided (stupid idea) that I would go take care of me pops instead of asking me younger bro to do it because things were sketchy here in Topanga. 9” and still accumulating. Well, there were mini slides going down the hill but I was still able to get through. Until I got to the tight and steepest part of the road(cement trucks will only deliver half a load with a hefty price). Mud piled 9” high in some areas and a cut trunk with roots right in the middle of the road. Damn. Pouring, I put it in park and engaged the parking break…Taco begins to slide , I was a passenger until it started to creep ever so slowly. I made the stupid decision to go for it. Quickly got off the truck and moved the surprisingly large and heavy trunk. It looked smaller and no doubt would have cause havoc under the truck had I slid over it. So by the time I was moving back to get back into the truck which seemed like forever, the truck had stopped sliding. I know, fucking bonehead move, but it was either that or go over the trunk. Steep, muddy slippery conditions I had to go for it. Now getting back this evening will be another deal.

Stay safe out there if you dare tread for whatever reason :fingerscrossed:

I forgot to ask my question. In a situation like that, trans in park, parking brake engaged. Is it best to keep it as is while your sliding, or is that too much stress on the drivetrain, and moving the selector to D is best? But one would have to go past reverse. Would that be a greater blow to the drivetrain? Too much to think while I was sliding!

I mean.. mechanical sympathy is great. But if your truck is sliding downhill in landslide conditions you probably got bigger issues :D

That said the parking brake will hold the wheels (assuming everything is adjusted). You would step on the brake pedal, release parking brake, shift to R or D doesn't matter, then finally let off the brake pedal. Same as any other time shifting out of Park. Whatever force is on the wheels is held by the brakes as long as your foot is on the pedal

Art, the feeling wasn’t good. Thankfully the wheels cocked to the right took me against the hill and I believe that’s what stopped me. It would not have been good if it happened 15’ before. I feel bad for the neighbor who has his driveway entrance there. Some fucking idiot came from above with his tractor and scooped most of it into his driveway. He now can’t get out.

I asked the question because I don’t know if it was a butt dyno feel, but I could feel strain on the drivetrain and I was thinking of shifting but I could feel it was kinda tight. So I didn’t go for it.

Now for any idiot who thinks this is funny or take a jab at it, you’ll have your day soon enough, I just won’t be there to see it :0)

For your immediate question, if it's already in park there's nothing to do but to hold the foot on brake, ride it out, Left arm firmly holding the seatbelt near the release. I say left arm because this position somewhat protects it, and you need the window side of your body to remain unbroken for future escape attempts.

Larger picture answer, as a geo degree holding dude, there's a very thin line between mud that's pushing your truck and mud that's entombing your truck. The real answer would be to not attempt it in the first place, turn around and find another route.

I think with your parking brake engaged, shifting would serve you no benefit. wheels are already locked up so you might as well keep em locked until you come to a stop unless you're actively trying to steer away from something.

Glad it all worked out dude. be safe out there

I carried bags of sand in my 1st Gen truck for traction while working near Angeles Crest Hwy during the winter, and had to open one once to throw down behind it when it was slipping on its own after parking it on a steep part of the road. That worked out well.

Backing up would have been too dangerous to attempt in the dark and rain pouring down. It was what it was. Man, I’m just glad the Taco’s driveline turned out okay.

As for getting in front of the slide, shit, sometimes you have to grab the bulls by the balls.

Crazy to think it’s going to take until this fall for the landslide that’s blocking the 27 to be cleared.
