2/32 and 3/32 left on tires - Am I insane to try to eek out another 1500 miles?

    Hi all,

Still rocking the Goodyear Wrangler Kevlar tires on my 19 TRD OR. I'm at about 37k miles.

I am about to embark on a 1500 mile road trip and at my oil change appointment today I was told I'm down to 2/32 (front) and 3/32 (back). My tires are apparently down to the wear bars with 2mm left.

My question is not should I roll with these for another 6 months — but rather how irresponsible is it to try to complete this road trip in 2 days with tires at this level. Currently calling around trying to find someone to install the Toyo AT3s I want tomorrow.

The Toyo Open Country ATIII are Superior to the OE GY, just do it.

2/32 is much easier to puncture and blow out on potholes. It will hydroplane in a storm.

I’m not wealthy but I never run my tires that low.

Thank you both for the pep talk - it is what I needed. I am going to relatively the middle of nowhere Idaho and will be on gravel roads so y'all are right I shouldn't even think of risking it.

I called the DT location near me and they can do it tomorrow (the website said mid next week was earliest).

While I have you guys here — doing the penny test revealed that the outside tread seems to be wearing out a bit faster than the outer treads. I ride on gravel/dirt roads A LOT, often with the pressure a little bit lower than recommended when I do it. Does this tread difference indicate that I should get an alignment, or is a little bit deeper wear on the outside tread normal?

Tacoma runs positive camber so it’s normal, but alignments with tires go hand in hand.

All the Goodyears I've ever run get real slippery as they hey hit the lower wear compounds. Too much money for too little performance.

Normally i try/hope to make it thru summer so as to run fresh deep winter treads.

Iffy worn tires + gravel .... ehhh....
