Took my 2019 tacoma in for service today. When I got it back they told me i have both a power steering pump leak as well as the rack and pinion. Both will need to be replaced totaling about $1700. This dealership tried to pull one over on me before so i included the pictures they gave me. First two and power steering and last three are the rack and pinion. Are they trying to scam me again?

I mean, there is fluid leaking. I would not go back to a dealer that tried to scam me. What was their previous thing they tried to pull?

Took it in for a belt, tried to tell me pulleys were bad when they weren’t which would have ran me hundreds more in repairs. In the pictures I don’t even see the power steering leak they’re referring to nor could i find any proof checking on my own

The power steering rack is seeping at the boot, they are not wrong there. It’s pretty common, I just noticed the same at 47K miles. I’m not going to do anything to mine until it becomes a real problem.

Up at the PS pump it’s more than likely a timing cover leak which is significantly more than what they quoted. Look up the 2GR-FKS timing cover leak.

I probably don’t check enough but I checked last year and it was looking low. Different dealership in my hometown tells me it’s normal because it breaks down over time and didn’t report any leaks. After todays report i checked again (in the dealer lot) and it looks higher so it might have been topped off with the service. It’s hard for me to check at my apartment because my parking spot is not on level ground

I mean your rack is definitely leaking...bad enough to change? Idk. Keep an eye on the fluid level.

Do nothing. The boot on mine was like this for a few years. I'm at almost 80k
As was mentioned, the other leak is a cover leaking.
Save 1700 and buy a can or two of the decreaser and clean the area.
Seepage is ok, active leak -act.

I'm convinced that all 3rd gen racks seep fluid. If your PS level hasn't moved, you should be more than fine

That is likely a timing cover leak.

To repair the leak the rack has to come out so you may as well do both down the road together.

Yeah, as mentioned, that is likely a front cover leak - not a PS pump. I have the same rack leak on my 18. I am not going to have Toyota replace it because the replacement unit is likely to do the same thing. I have contacted folks in the know at my dealership and they tell me Toyota has not upgraded the rack.
