    yep, it's supposed to work that way. some brainiac at toyota software engineering assumed that the only time someone is in the vehicle is when it's running.

    now the even more fun action: if you're getting ready to change direction, and for instance, were in a panic situation that you needed to get the Hell Out Of Dodge.

    in a situation where you'd shift from one direction to the other direction before the truck has come to a complete stop, it will stall the motor, the dash lights up like a christmas tree for every low voltage, over/under temp, and in-gear warning it has access to, you need to calm yourself down in the middle of what ever panic situation you are, calmly drop the shifter to neutral, turn the truck off, start it, then calmly shift it into gear, and then GTFO. basically a 30 second process. by then, if you're blocking traffic, everyone is not only angry at you, but someone is likely getting out of their vehicle to yell at you ...

    i call it the anti-bank-robbery 'feature'.
