I’m rebuilding my rack and pinion but can’t get this seal off to replace it. Either I need to press off the bearing, which doesn’t seem possible because there is a washer behind it that looks like it has teeth going into holes in the shaft (ie not meant to be removed), or I need to remove the tiny pin. I tried to pull the pin and it does not want to come out. I’m pretty sure there are tiny O-rings inside this that need to come out too.

    Any suggestions?

I checked the FSM, and it looks like this seal might not be serviceable. There’s no instructions for removing it. I’ll leave it and run it. If it leaks, I’ll be buying a new one from Toyota.

Out of curiosity, did you try a hook spanner or lock-nut key on the washer? It looks a lot like the old style thin retainer locknut that japanese and euro motorbikes had throughout the 80 and 90s.

I did not. Are the grooves in the shaft ramped to allow the nut to be removed by twisting on those? I hadn’t thought of that possibility. It looked kinda like it was crimped on there. I gave up when I read that chapter of the FSM 5 times trying to find the part where it gets removed.

Could be? I really don’t know as i’ve not yet had my rack and pinion out. Just wondering is all and hard to tell from the photo. But it definitely could be crimped or otherwise mechanically locked in place too, so who knows haha.
