If you had a 3rd gen, and you are about to hook a trailer to your brand spanking new 4th gen, you might be in for a surprise.

Toyota completely redesigned the hitch receiver.

I was using a hitch pin with a 3.5" usable length on our 3rd gen.

The new design requires a 5" usable length.

Just a heads up, it might save you an unexpected trip to the store.

EDIT: Your truck probably came with a new pin. Mine did, I remember wondering why they supplied a hitch pin, now I know why.

I was searching around for this as well. I got a pin with clip from Ace for $2.39. It was 5/8th diameter and 4 1/4" long and it fits perfectly, maybe a little long. It was the zinc one that is bent. They had a couple other styles as well.

Did your truck not come with one in the glove box? Mine did. Not a locking pin. Just a basic pin, bent on one end.

Mine did not. I saw this on a thread, and called the dealership to ask about it and they did not know what I was talking about.

This thread helped me. I did not know there was a hitch pin in my glove box until I read this. Thanks, folks.

I have 3 receivers, so I like to keep a hitch pin in each so they are ready. I ordered three additional pins from www.toyotapartsdeal.com, part number PT228-0C231, I found that long pins were very difficult to find locally.

I also just realized that the locking hitch pin for my 1up bike rack is too short. I'll have to buy an unsightly cable lock or something to protect someone from walking away with my bike rack.

I mistakenly left a locking pin on my 3rd gen for a little too long, and damn near didn’t get it off.

Only use those things when you absolutely need them.

    Allow me to translate:

The one that came with your truck went home with someone else before you took delivery.

Mine came with a new hitch pin.

The 4G receiver hitch is BURLY. Especially for a 2”. Way beefier than the one on my 2G or my 2020 Gladiator.

Sorry to dig up an older post, but I'm curious what length 1UP replacement pin would be needed with the 4th gen hitch?

Looks like 5.2", 5.6", and 6.7" options are available - these are just the pin, would reuse the existing lock portion.

I don't have a 4th gen yet else I'd measure. Placing an order with 1UP for other stuff soon and figured I may as well include the pin and save paying shipping in a few weeks or months when I do get a 4th gen.

    Thanks.

Thanks, I saw that but are the wheel lock pins the same as the hitch bar lock pins? The longest hitch bar lock pin they offer is 3.0" which won't clear the 4G hitch.

For the 4G you will need at least a 4 1/4" usable length pin to clear the receiver.

    I contacted 1up and got a response..

Yes, they use the same lock coupler and are the same diameter pin. The only difference is the length of the pin.

I will be ordering the 5.2" pin.
