It is just bad luck more than anything else. Mass produced engines have 'statistical' failures. Yours is one of those. Most all failures will happen before 60K, the power train warranty. All manufacturers, not just vehicle manufacturers, go through this same thing. Sounds like the dealership is treating you right.

Glad that dealer is stepping up. OEM filter is fine. I do 5K OCI with them. OEM filter (same part number as Taco's) has been used in my wife's 2014 RAV I4 since it was new. It has 110K+ miles on it now, no oil is used between the OCI, engine is still quite.

Yep and thankfully it’s rare with Tacomas but I’m glad the OP is having it covered under warranty. I read an article (in a paper magazine, can’t remember which auto mag it was) recently that compared midsize truck catastrophic failures by year and the 3rd gen 3.5 has a crazy small amount. It can happen but you need to be very unlucky.

Bold part big time. Stuff happens, life happens, it's what they do about the issue that makes or breaks it.

Yes my 2010 "shouldn't" have needed a frame but they stepped up. GM refused to honour their written warranty on a known defect on my old Colorado and told me tough shit.

When I worked for Vw/Audi in the 90s, no one used Purolator oil filters. Guess who had the contract in the US to make OEM VW and Audi filters? Purolator.

I don’t know much about that stuff, but my understanding is the oem would give the specs to the filter manufacturer which may or may not be the same specs as the stuff purolator sells on the shelves under their own brand.

Though I think the oil filter is the least of anyone’s concerns with a 90’s VW my first and last VW was a 2012 GLI that guzzled oil like it was going out of style, and VW said it’s acceptable to lose 1 quart every 3k miles or something ridiculous. And that engine had a faulty timing chain tensioner which later failed and I got a new top end via warranty, but it still guzzled oil “within spec”

    Just got it back finally,

new short block, gasket kit, expected.

Said oil filter housing was full of metal, #3 bearing was welded to the crank.

seems good, though the shift indicator light isn’t working. they all work until it is in D or S, then no light and dash doesn’t indicate the gear it’s in. Guessing something unplugged, may take it back unless it’s something easy I can find.

There seems to be a small but very concerning quality concern with Toyota bearings… similar issues happening on the tundras. Wondering if there is a bad batch somewhere

Well shortly after leaving check engine/drive start control malfunction popped up. Guess that’s related to the shift indicator thing

Few yota techs on YT also noticing this on the new 3.4. Hard to tell if this was also a thing 10-15yrs ago since the 4.0 didn’t have as much online attention as the 3.5 and now the next gen engines.

Only 500 miles in, seems good. I brought it back to the dealer for the shifter and they said they adjusted it - and it was good, but it still does it occasionally which is annoying...eventually triggers the drive-start control malfunction, since I assume it doesn't think it's in gear when it is.

Main observation is the engine is much quieter than it ever was...Before, especially when letting off the throttle and coasting, it would have a diesel-like rattly tick that I'd assumed was normal from my reading, but the new short block doesn't have that happening.

One thing that I might be concerned about is the life up to ~22k. Something unknown and it went another ~20K+ but those early miles might have been, well "tough"?
