Directly behind my factory front bumper plastic fairing, there is a piece of aluminum square tubing running horizontally. Are there any electrical lines, sensors or airbag sensors etc? I need to drill a hole through it...

It’s just an aluminum crashbar, your actual “bumper”. Nothing inside

Alright, got it. It looks like just an aluminum extrusion, im willing to bet theres some steel in there considering its the bumper. Thanks

No steel until you get to the frame horns. It is designed to crumple and absorb energy in the event of a crash

Most "bumpers" we think of nowadays are actually "bumper covers". (the plastic fascia below the grill)

Can't remember the last production car that actually had a real front bumper. Can anyone?

Its designed and engineered. Drilling holes will compramise it.

ARB Bumper, SOS sliders, SOS rear bumper, SOS skid plate. OME Lift. Some other stuff.
It's just machined aluminum, no wires or sensors. Atleast that's how it is on my 2012, I know Toyota changed the front ends on the 2012-2015 but I can't see there being any major changes in regards to what we are talking about here.

I removed this from my truck when I installed an ARB and I can tell you there are no wires or sensors involved with this part.

Car? '97 Lincoln Town Car probably

Pickups like Ram Power Wagon still have a steel front bumper today.

97 would be too new right?

But go back to the 80s and you can see the actual metal bumper on the front and rear (which I think USDOT outlawed because it caused more fatalities):

1997 is before the turn of the century, not new lol.

There's also the Cadillac Fleetwood which ran until 1996 with metal chrome bumper:

This major piece of metal graces the front of my 1974 Olds Cutlass 442. When we disassembled it for a paint job (many years ago) my friend Jack and I struggled to handle it - even balanced on a rolling garage jack. Curious, we borrowed a scale from a fellow we knew to get an idea of what it weighed...........256 pounds.
    1974 442_2.jpg

It could crush my Tacoma - and then drive home.......... gets better gas mileage than the Toyota too.
