So I am going to replace my spark plugs this weekend and it’s my first time. I have read through a lot of the details on here but one thing I didn’t see until I watched the team oil drop video how to, was applying dielectric grease on the spark plugs as well as on the inside of the wire clips to the ignition coil and inside of the ignition coil. Is this a good practice? And is this what the majority of you all have done?

also double confirming that what was mentioned for torque specs in the video are correct, he said 13 ft lb ?

Yes, torque for the 3rd gen plugs is 13 ft/lbs. Just to add, torque for 2nd gen plugs is 15 ft/lbs.

Sorry, I can't comment on the use of dielectric grease. Not sure about that. I do add a tiny bit of antisieze to the threads, but this is up for debate.

I didn't add dielectric grease or anti seize, just straight up replaced the plugs with brand new OEM gap ones. I will say that the job sucks (worse for manual trans trucks), but it's not as bad as everybody makes it seem. Don't forget to reset your ecu after you do the plug job

Pea-sized amount of grease on the ignition coil opening. I just use white silicone grease (same stuff used in passenger car brake caliper slider pin boots).

Antiseize on the plug threads helps with feel. I run the plugs down to the bottom, then give it half a turn with a long ratchet or breaker bar to compress the crush washer. Been doing this on all my vehicles [Tacoma, 4Runner, lawn mower (yearly plug replacement), Subaru (little working room)]

"Should I apply grease to the spark plug thread?

If a thread lubricant such as grease is coated on the thread, tightening of the spark plug increases when applying the same torque; this can cause damage to the spark plug. Subsequently, vibrations may cause the plug to come loose. Because of this, DENSO recommends not using a thread lubricant.

Only in a few exceptional cases (such as with some LPG-powered forklifts) may a small amount of grease be required. In such cases, the spark plug will be supplied pre-lubricated."

Why? There no learning values associated with Ignition except kclv.
BTW, unplugging a battery cable is not resetting ECU.

After reading many posts on changing plugs on my Taco, I’m dreading it a bit but it’s still a long way off. I have always put a dab of antiseize on the plug threads. I always put dielectric grease on the plug and the plug boot. I also tighten the plug enough to compress the crush washer too. And I always break the old plug loose before pulling it out and use compressed air to blow out around the plug to prevent dirt or contamination from dropping into the cylinder.

This magnetic thin wall extension all in one was a game changer for me .

It really wasn't that bad. Just have a variety of extensions and a couple universal joints for your ratchet, and some sort of non-damaging pry tool to help disconnect the connectors that are in the way. I did the passenger side one evening and the driver's side another evening. As long as the plugs work, the engine won't know if half of them are new and half are old. Probably took me an hour or two per side working slowly. The worst part was when the rubber grommet fell out of my spark plug socket, and I had to rig up a way to keep it in place. A magnetic socket is probably better.

I didn't use any anti seize or grease. It didn't look like they used that from the factory.

Thanks gentlemen. I’m going no anti seize and will put just a little dielectric grease

Just did all six, wasn’t terrible but some of them were covered in oil.

is that common since they were loose? Two out of the three on both sides were loose.

What is your source for stating this. And I’ll bite, explain just how to “reset the ecu”

Sounds like you got it licked. The magnetic plug sockets are so much nicer.

Bracket on the drivers side, you can’t miss it. Other than that it’s not bad, just time consuming.

That’s just oil sipping where they were loose. I wouldn’t be concerned with it unless you notice it drinking oil.

Normal, same issue with loose plugs from the factory and oil on threads. A dab of anti seize on the spark plug threads and a dab of dielectric grease in the ignition coil boot. I didn't torque them, hand tighten only then a little more.

Truck was about 6 years old with 18k miles when I swapped plugs.
