How to get your key fob remote start working when button presses don’t work.

Hopefully this helps some people as going through the threads on here I could not find the solution when I searched.

The Easy to Identify Connected Problems:
Your key fob isn’t starting your truck, even though it should cause your model has connected services.
When you select Apps on your head unit there are no apps.
Your SOS button does not work.

    The Solution:
Use your SOS button and if it’s working ask if your vehicle is set as commercial. Apparently if it’s set as commercial you don’t get apps, it’ll need to be changed on their end to get the apps to use connected services which activates your control module which turns on remote start.

If your SOS says control module not activated, then you’ll need to contact the number the SOS gives you and explain that you have no apps or that it’s saying control module not activated.

    How I figured it out:
What I found is my truck wouldn’t start with the keyfob no matter what button process I tried.

I decided to just try the connected services trial to see if it had to be activated first.

Problem is the app asks you to verify you own the vehicle by selecting Apps, then the Toyota app. My head unit had nothing on it when I selected apps. Just a blank selection screen that had a pop you click okay on.

SOS button said control module not activated.

I called the number and explained and the person told me it showed as commercial in their system and I needed to send a copy of the purchase agreement/bill of sale. (My truck was a used Avis rental with like 10k miles on it)

Sent the info and then called back and they activated the communication module.

Connected the connected service trial and used the remote start as a test. It worked.

My Keyfob now works to remote start my truck, I have the connected service app, and WiFi app on my head unit now.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the keyfob should work regardless of the connected service status. I just had to go through that to get the communication module activated or the vehicle out of commercial mode for it start working.

I only wanted the fob working so I can start the AC in the 90+ southeast heat.

Good find. So, you believe, any previous rental vehicle may be subject to this malady.

    Good description of the problem.

I found out if you also decline their master data consent they also retaliate against you and turn off your keyfob remote start.

My keyfob remote start worked perfectly fine. I read into how much data they are pulling off your vehicle without you truly knowing so I declined data consent. Big brother does not like it when they cannot control your life and will try and make your life harder as a result!

OK, you got me here! HOW does one "decline data consent"? I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport. This is interesting...

go to the app. Click on your icon, click on account, click on data privacy portal, decline master data consent.

I don't have any connected services, as I think that was an option and I knew I had no need for any of them. BUT, if you say, the Toyota App can be used for this, I will download it and see what I can do. Thanks!

Once the trial runs out I’m going to do some digging on this. As far as I understand it you can deny all the agreements except the master to use the fob start.

I plan on checking the posts for the wire reroute method for stopping data being sent as someone on here discovered that data was still sent after denying the services if I remember the post correctly. I’m curious if that method stops the fob start or not.

I think this is the post you want. I need to study it a little more though, so I understand it!

You can remove the DCM completely and the FOB remote start still works on my 2021.
