I hear about people my age doin’ stuff. They’re skiing and hang-gliding and climbing Mount Everest. Shit. I feel proud of myself if I get my feet through my underwear without falling over

In 1898, a 16 year old cowboy named Jim White was riding the range, hunting strays. Seeing a large plume of smoke, he rushed to find out what was going on. It turned out to not be smoke at all, but thousands and thousands of bats emerging a huge cave for their evening feeding. He returned a few days later with fence wire and rope. He built himself a crude ladder and went down with nothing but a kerosene lantern. Apparently kids had big cojones in those days. He spent several years exploring, naming formations and rooms. He talked photographers into going with him and eventually convinced congress to name it a national park. Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
The village just outside the park is named White’s City in his honor.
