(I am not mechanically inclined, I know the basic stuff) So I have a 2012 Tacoma with around 185k miles. Around a year ago my check engine light came on and after awhile it started shifting rough and eventually I couldn’t go over 65. Took it to the shop and they said it was some “air stuff” part and it was a recall so they replaced whatever it was for free basically. Then 8 months later, about a month it does the same thing so I take it back to the same shop and they said it was probably a faulty part and they will order a new one and replace it so they did and it cost me close to $700 to “fix” it. Well…. It did it again prolly 2 weeks ago so I took it back to them and they said they found the actual issue this time and it was a different part they needed so they ordered the new part and replaced it. I picked it up yesterday got in it and drove it home seemed just fine….. get in it last night to go eat, same thing engine light came on…any tips or anyone had similar issues?

Take it to a different shop that actually knows what they are doing.

First off we need to know what code(s) it's setting so we know what we're dealing with.

Also has it been the same code(s) each time? (There's hundreds of possible trouble codes).

That really doesn't mean anything, dealer techs for the most part follow flow charts which are basically if this then that. Flow charts have their place but they don't account for alot of variables and lead to alot of misdiagnosed vehicles.
There are good techs at both dealers and independents that can think outside the box and properly diagnose vehicles with >95% accuracy but they are not easy to find and they command a premium because of their skillset, most just follow the flow chart or read a code and replace a part.

    oooorrrrrrr...
teach yourself not to fix or have fixed a year old check engine light that potentially wrecking a dozen effected components.

Blaming a shop for self caused aggravated issues is not only ignorant but complicated to properly diagnose. 10 to 1 the shop was told - "Gee I dunno it just started running bad" -
