Spark plugs going down this weekend

I stand mortified and humiliated ...

 

I've done at least a dozen 3rd gen spark plug jobs. Several trucks had loose spark plugs from the factory. Some were hand loose and oil was all over the spark plug and coil pack.

It's ridiculous how Toyota let that happen. I would guess the torque value at factory isn't high enough. Someone said 13 ft lbs is the spec. I'd shoot for 15 or 16 ft lbs.

Personal experience. I got pretty shit mpg after my plug change, resetting the ECU brought 2-3mpg back. I followed the 3rd gen tuners instructions + other people here on TW. Iirc I let it sit with the negative terminal off for a half hour, then let it idle with no loads on for 5mins. You can call it placebo if you want but the mpg increase was noticeable when I did the calculations at the pump.

When we started messing with OVT tunes, we quickly found out that the battery disconnect does not do anything to ECU. If you are replacing/servicing some engine components, you need to reset learning values by using scanner's function (techstream ot other). The reset you have done probably reset Combination meter Control unit so it started calculating mpgs.

OP, let us know how it goes. I had the dealership replace mine the last 2 times and I'm tired of spending the extra money. I am going to buy the tools and parts and get it done myself in the next few weeks.
