Started my truck the other (literally fired right up and ran) day and it started squealing like a stuck pig. Shut it off, knowing it was a belt issue, and popped the hood. Tensioner pulley bearing exploded so the pulley leaned over and slipped the belt. But it ran and shredded the belt a bit before I turned it off.
I then proceeded to remove the pulley (simple with a 14mm socket) and went to Oreilly’s to purchase a replacement. WARNING Oreilly’s (and other parts stores) sell the idler/tensioner pulley but those are not the tensioner pulley. Bolt is different, much longer, to fit the position on the idler. Pulley looks identical so I didn’t know until I got back to my truck in the work parking lot. After much Googling I realized that you can only buy the tensioner assembly (in a hurry so I wasn’t checking every single resource) and nobody talked about replacing the pulley. I bought the assembly off Amazon for stupid cheap and it arrived the next day. Put it in my vice and removed the pulley, nut and bolt. This morning got a ride to work and replaced the pulley and belt. Only thing that’s hard is placing the nut in the back of the tensioner assembly. I learned that you need to use a socket, or wrench, to “loosen” the tension or swing the tensioner assembly down. Then you can access the hole in the back for the nut to slot into and THEN you can put the new pulley back on.
Yes, it would be best to replace the assembly but not in my work parking lot without any real equipment and not when I need the truck for daily driving. Lol. That’s my helpful hint for anyone looking to do that job on the cheap!! Cost $60 total for pulley and belt and took 45 mins including the time I attempted to determine how to get the nut into position…
