The forward-looking radar portion of my cruise control quit working several years ago, and I had to learn to hold the button in for a couple of seconds to get cruise control up. Now that doesn't work. I think I've eliminated the fuse as the problem since cc is the only thing not working, and it's on the same circuit as the instrument panel, which is working.

My dealer a 5-hour drive away, so I hope to find a fix I can do. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm pretty sure that if the grill mounted radar sensor is dirty/ not operating, it shuts down the cruise control. Check the connection on that sensor and make sure everything is spic and span inside and outside of the cover plate.

When you press/hold the button, does it say cruise control ready on the cluster? If it does, I would maybe have someone drive behind me for a bit to ensure the brake switch isn't intermittently being activated or if applicable, I would ohm your clutch switch and see if it's staying triggered. If it doesn't say on the dash that cruise is ready then it could be the cruise control switch.

Otherwise your best bet i'd say is to scan for codes and possibly see if the module stored history "cancelations" which would reveal what's preventing it from engaging. Chevs had two circuits in the brake switch so despite the brake lights not coming on, the brake switch would stick on and prevent cruise from activating or turn it off randomly. You'd only know the cause by looking at the cruise control history.

A dirty sensor will only prevent radar cruise from working, normal cruise will still work okay.

Not sure if this helps but it may be worth a shot to see if Toyota can check your sensor. I think they were putting foam tape around it to prevent water from getting in the electronics. Supposedly it was causing intermittent issues. I noticed my electronics dependent on the sensor have acted up with rain on rare occasions.

I did that when if first starting acting up several years ago. Then learned that I still had cruise control even with the forward looking radar out of commission. I think I need to take it to the dealer.

Prior to this week, the cruise control circle appeared if I held the button in for 3 seconds or so. Not anymore. I've got an automatic, so do I have a clutch switch?

Thank you. It was at the dealer when the fuel sensor quit and they didn't get to cruise control in the time they had it.

Brake switch mentioned above sounds like a good place to start.
If that's not it, just put a brick on the pedal

Ya you wouldn't have a clutch switch, it'll just be a jumper. But okay if nothing appears on the dash when you switch it on then i'd say the message isn't getting to the module to let it know you want cruise. I'm at work presently but I found this link that could guide you for the time being. When things settle down i'll see if I can help more. For now take a look at this and see if it helps.

Your problem is interesting to me because when I have disconnected the grill radar sensor all Cruise Control has been deactivated; I've removed my grill on many occasions to work on other items. Seems like you have been fortunate to still have regular cruise control when adaptive cruise control has not been working. Before this it has been my conclusion that it was Toyota's "choice" to deactivate the standard speed dependent cruise control if the radar sensor was defective. Your experiences have me confused.

As had been mentioned check the grill connections.

I'm in agreement with post #3 and disagree with the conclusion of post #4.

I purchased my 2021 in Dec of 2020; at that time there was lots of talk about the sensor getting wet and the foam being added before some changes to the sensor not requiring the foam for my year of production. As outlined in post #6; rain and snow definitely stop my cruise control from working - both the adaptive and the standard speed dependent.

I also have an automatic transmission and the loose clutch switch connector has no jumper in it. I think the ECU takes that into consideration.

Turns out it was mouse damage to the knock sensor. All is well. Thanks to all who commented here.

Could you elaborate on what made you look there.

    Were there codes not shown?

I noticed the cruise control wasn't working a day after the transmission started shifting late and hard (see my other thread). Talking this over with a friend, he mentioned that it could be a problem with electronics, maybe a solenoid. That's when I realized the transmission and cruise control problems hard started at the same time. He mentioned mice and that made sense. We've had a terrible year with mice. So I took it to the mechanic who serviced the transmission and his computer found an error with the knock sensor.
