Oil violently splashing out while draining is the christening of 3rd gen Tacoma owners too. I now use an 8qt bucket which seems to contain the burning holy water pretty well.

Yeah, might see if I can get a Home Depot bucket under there next time

yeah, opening the filler cap was probably a bad idea. Used to doing motorcycle oil changes haha. And yeah, the fumoto drain valve is probably going on my truck at 5,000 miles.

Thanks for the video! Is there a reason you poured oil into the filter? I've never heard of that. I have heard of just using a little bit of oil to rub on the seal of the filter.

The philosophy is out there. Dunno the answer, but it's not really realistic for a horizontal filter. Perhaps just fill it halfway? I don't know.

reduces the time needed for the system to build oil pressure thereby reducing wear

I tried it on my oil change and was pretty surprised how little oil came out when putting on the filter since it’s horizontal

Can anyone confirm if the oil filter part has been upgraded to YZZF2? that seems to come up a lot when searching for 90915-YZZN1

Can’t help but chuckle a bit seeing the 3rd Gen owners jealous of the 4th Gen spin-on filter

Nice to see they went back to a spin-on filter though. Should help keep things a bit cleaner than the cartridge system on the 2GR

Reduces oil starvation when you start the engine for the first time after the oil change. And it’s also surprising how much oil the filter media inside of the housing can soak up. I had to pour oil into the filter about 4 times before it actually stayed full. The first few pours just got absorbed by the media.

I’m used to working with 10w40 motorcycle oil. Way more viscous. I’ve filled filters to the top with 10w40 and installed horizontally…not a drop spilled. Just gotta spin fast. That 0w20 really got me hahah. Oil shower.

FWIW, technically you can use 0w-40 in your Tacoma with no worries.

The difference between cold 0w20 and warm 0w20 is roughly 10x the difference between warm 0w20 and warm 0w40. Temperature affects far greater a viscosity difference than the difference between 20 and 40 grade.

Engines must always be able to run on a higher viscosity, else they would never be able to run in the cold.

Not sure if you guys know this but the OEM filter is only rated at 50% efficiency at 20 µm. That’s pretty poor quality. A good aftermarket filter will be rated at 99%.

    Receipts would be nice.

Or don’t wait until 10k to change it.
