You should paint match your grill. I’ve always liked the 09+ LED OEM tails with the blue.

Seriously consider the superior OEM HOUSINGS (light shells, not the complete unit) as they have the MOST accurate fit, finish, and best seal) and DO NOT PUT LEDS IN THEM! There are numerous valid reasons you keep being advised to STAY WITH OEM! Just do a little reading.

Why don’t you retrofit a high quality projector

I doubt anything aftermarket does that well.

in my last car I put
Bosch AL E46 gen 2 projectors
    Non swivel
    Painted black cutoff shield
    osram CBI D1S
    TRS clear lens

it was great. And cheap if you ignore the bulbs which need to be done anyway. HIDs last 10yr/2000hr.

in my truck I put upgraded harness, fresh housing, stronger bulb

because I did not feel like doing that. However the thread suggests you do.

the limitation on cars is they cannot fit good big projectors known to be good. For example the above projector had a reputation for being decent. So do some others.
You do not have that problem. The Tacoma is roomy with a giant headlight. You can pick something good.

then write a DIY for us to copy.

But what if one is hell bent on something other than. Oem(for appearance sake). What's the next best option for performance meets aesthetics?

probably not a bad idea in that case to get spare new DEPO since they’re cheap

then in off time upgrade them on the bench without downing the truck during that

Yeah I’m not an oem only snob - it’s just the gimmicky lights aren’t worth the money. I actually bought the cheapest oem looking housings I could find on eBay for $65, siliconed the seams, and put new o rings on the lightbulb connectors and bought a set of high power H4 bulbs and a quality wiring harness and they’ve worked great for the $200 I put into them. DEPO would be better than even the ones I bought.

Yeah I think the low end oem look headlights have been getting better. I bought $80 ones the first time I replaced them about 9 years ago (truck already came with aftermarket otherwise I would have just used a 2k clear on the lenses to make them clear again). Scattered the beam all over and now the even cheaper ones I bought have a pretty decent cut off - hot spots yes but doable.

I bought some Baja Designs SAE fog lights for my wife’s 4runner that only had original housings which were like a candle and a half’s worth of light and then some $100 housings and am getting decent results again with the high output H4’s and battery harness.

SAE aux lights are 10 times better than all the comparably priced China housings. I got the version 1 SAE Baja Designs and did their free upgrade program to the version 2 which are much brighter.
