Any good GL5 75w90. Personally I use Valvoline in the little baggies. Makes filling up very easy.

    HC,
East Coast Gear Supply (ECGS) is one of, if not the best differential builder in the US. The owner's very educated opinion on gear oils is worth reading: ECGS Gear Oil Recommendation (eastcoastgearsupply.com) If you have not changed your gear oil recently, this would be a good opportunity.

Leid…thank you for your response and suggestion. I certainly will check it out! I hv2 replace my passenger rear seal as it is leaking. I probably will or should replace both seals. Thought I’d add some oil to bide a little time before I can get it fixed before I totally lose my back brakes and cause more problems…

When you say “add” gear oil? You should drain it and replace all new gear oil.

i would definitely like to know what temps that rear diff is running under certain conditions
might have to change it MORE frequently than the normal interval suggestions are

So I just purchased 3 quarts of this oil and I’ll make sure to drain it first before adding it. I never changed or added gear oil before so I’ll have to utube it lol
Thanks for everyone’s help and advice

MAKE SURE that fill plug comes out FIRST before EVER touching drain plug

Very good choice. That Lucas 85W-140 dino gear oil is the ECGS recommended gear oil that I have been running in my front diff./rear diff./R100 Tcase. It is very inexpensive and widely available. Summit Racing sells 1 gal jugs for a very low price with free shipping over $110 or so. I ran the expensive synthetics for over a decade but switched to the Lucas dino gear oil after reading ECGS's opinion. The only real difference I have noticed is that my wallet has stayed a good bit thicker.

Down here in the Houston area, the performance dif re-builder guru's at Pyle Bros says dino oil only for diff's is the only way to go.

I lived in Kingwood TX for 16 years while working for CAL then UAL and did rescue/recovery with my '97 V6 Taco 4x4 after the flooding from Hurricane Harvey. The Taco loaded with gas, Stihl chainsaws, logging chains, and a Glock & M4 truck gun to deal with the POS thieves all came in quite handy. A week or so later, I developed typhus for my trouble. Almost lost my 20/20 eyesight. The Kingwood NAPA store carried Amsoil gear oil which was pretty good stuff. But you dreaded changing all the gear oils not just because of the labor involved but because of the expense. I can't tell a bit of difference using Lucas dino gear oil and it does not cost a small fortune.

I am thinking that the change frequency needs to be dialed down on my rig to 12k miles
It was a bit on the watery last time I drained it in october and put some Valvoline 75w90 in there
Too many consistent highway miles heated it up too much?
I wish to not have any differential gear issues ever!

...Was going to buy amsoil severe but now the Lucas has me all intrigued
And is it safe to actually put 140 in there during the summer months?

Amsoil Severe was some very good stuff. I still have some to use up. But Lucas 85W-140 dino gear oil is what the diff. experts are telling us to run. Just change it more frequently, which is no problem here as I must change all the gear oils out at least once a year to keep water contamination at bay. Even with all the breathers well extended, moisture will exploit any opportunity to get in.
