Found this in the bottom of my oil pan after finishing up my 45k mile oil change (I change every 5k miles and use mobil 1 0W-20). It started as three pieces but is hard and crumbles under my fingers. It’s non-magnetic. I have no idea what it is and I tried searching with little luck. Has anyone encountered this or know what it is?

My current theory is it’s some crap I accidentally brushed into the drain pan when wiping down the skid plate that covers the oil pan. But I could be wrong. I did take apart the old filter and didn’t see anything in it.

Thats my current theory, but I don’t see any now that I’m done. I may have to go another 5k and be extra aware of underneath before I change the oil.

I always see stuff mixed with the oil when I drain the old oil from the collection container. I attribute it to stuff falling and accidently brushed in while my clumsy old body is working under there.

This is reassuring. Figured I’d consult the gods of TW before I brushed it off as nothing.

Did you cut open and inspect your oil filter? Any debris there?

It’s probably nothing but crap you knocked into the pan, but if you’re unsure next oil change put a screen above your oil bucket and filter it through.

    minor tweaks
Unless you degreased those particles they didn't come from inside the engine.

No. I’m convinced it’s just some road debris I knocked in there. Going to put a note on my oil filter wrench to remind me to clean up my undercarriage before doing my next oil change.

That's good, they do look like wet dirt.

When I first read the OPs post, I thought he was saying he removed the actual "oil pan" for 45K service!

PS: I concur, that's just some road grime that fell into the drain receptacle.
